See the best of the Incas’ legacy on this one week Peru tour, focused on Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and peerless Machu Picchu.

This 7-day trip through Peru’s Inca history focuses on Cusco and the Sacred Valley, including the area’s crowning glory, Machu Picchu.

Spend your first night in Lima, the capital of Peru. There are no planned activities here, but if you have time, consider an extra day or two to experience the economic and cultural heartbeat of today’s Peru. Then fly to Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire, where the influences of the past blend with the distinct architecture of the colonial era.

Visit Chinchero to learn more about local handicrafts including spinning and weaving. See techniques that have been preserved through generations, and perhaps pick up a unique souvenir before going on to Ollantaytambo. This town is a masterwork of ancient engineering, featuring an innovative fresh water system and terraces. You’ll also visit Pisac, an archaeological marvel showcasing the stonemasonry skills of the Incas. Discover more examples of their ingenuity at the circular terraces of Moray, an Inca agricultural research station, and the Maras salt pools, where you’ll learn about the ancestral techniques used to extract salt, and irrigate the local farms.

Continue to the Sacred Valley and the highlight of your trip, Machu Picchu. Lost for 400 years until its rediscovery in 1911, many mysteries still shroud the ruins. You’ll have plenty of opportunity to form your own theories as you explore, before staying overnight at Aguas Calientes. Then enjoy another day at the ruins. You may want to hike Huayna Picchu for an alternative view, or glimpse the city from the Sun Gate before returning to Cusco.

Transfer to Lima the next day for your flight home.

Book now and receive a free Unique dining experience in Cusco value of $150US per person.

Day 3

Sacred Valley

Today you will visit Chinchero, a charming valley town, and there you will attend a seminar to witness how the townsfolk spin and weave using traditional Andean techniques that they have preserved. You can also try your hand at what you have seen, making your very own cloth to take home with you. Last destination of the day is Ollantaytambo, a distinctive town on account of its architectural design, typically Incan, with narrow streets and canals that bring fresh water. There is an incredible archeological site, as well, with terraced slopes and finely worked stone walls that show the Incas' advanced workmanship. After this you will visit the town of Pisac, 31 km from Cuzco, in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The old city, an Incan archeological site, is located at the top of a mountain, and there you will witness firsthand the stonemasonry skill of our ancient ancestors. Lunch will be provided at a local restaurant.

Day 4

Sacred Valley

Today you will pass through unspoiled and picturesque Andean communities on your way to the Incan agricultural experimental center of Moray, famous for its sunken amphitheater, made up of four circular terraces, which appear to fade away into the earth like an artificial crater. The site was apparently an Inca agricultural research station filled with fertile earth and watered by a complex irrigation systems, designed for experimenting with crops at various altitudes.

You will continue onto the impressive Maras salt pools formed by water emerging from a lake inside the mountain in the Urubamba Valley. An amazing view is offered of the evaporating ponds used for the extraction of salt. Learn about ancestral techniques, which are still used, in agricultural, irrigation and salt-recollection tasks, as well as in Andean festivals and rites.

Archaeologists believe that the Inca "Virgins of the Sun" took refuge from the Spanish Conquistadors here. Guided tour of the ruins upon arrival. Lunch is at the Orient Express' Sanctuary Lodge located just a few steps from the Inca citadel. You return to Aguas Calientes at the base of the ruins in the late afternoon where you are free to explore the many restaurants of this mountain village.
