Mayan Mexico

Duration
6 Days
Prices From:
US$ 1,860

Bringing together the best Mayan sites of the Yucatan peninsula, this Mexico tour delves into the history of Central America’s most famous civilization, on a round trip journey from Cancun.

This 6-day trip through Mayan Mexico takes in the ruins of Tulum, Uxmal, and Chichen Itza, before returning to the sandy shores of Cancun.

Your journey starts at Tulum, the former walled city and port that opened Coba to the Caribbean Sea. This fascinating site includes such highlights as the Temple of the Frescoes, and its coastal location puts the Yucatan’s history in a stunning natural setting. After Tulum, visit Coba itself, which boasts the tallest Mayan pyramid in the region, the Nohoch Mul Pyramid. You’ll have plenty of time to explore both sites before returning to Cancun for the night.

Go on to Merida, your base for exploring the Uxmal ruins. Let your guide take you back to 800AD at Kabah, a large former religious centre that boasts the Arch of Kabah, the Pyramid of the Magician, and the splendid Palace of the Masks, dedicated to the rain god Chaac. Put some of your exploration into delicious perspective at the Choco Story Museum, where you’ll learn about the significance of cocoa to Mayan culture.

Your last ruins exploration is at Chichen Itza, possibly the most famous Mayan site in Mexico, and the empire’s former capital. A guide will take you through the most important sights, then give you time to explore on your own. A festive local show completes your day before returning to Cancun for departure, or an extra few days in the sun.

Day 2

Tulum and Coba Ruins

Tulum, the site of a Pre-Columbian Maya walled city and a port for Coba, is one of the best preserved coastal Maya sites in the Yucatan. Highlights of these ruins include the Temple of the Frescoes which has spectacular figurines of the "diving god". The ruins are stunningly set against a backdrop of some of Mexico's best beaches that are also ideal for diving and snorkeling. Tulum also has freshwater cenotes, passageways to underground rivers.

Following morning pickup from your hotel in Cancun, travel two hours by air-conditioned minivan to the southern tip of the Riviera Maya, where the archaeological site of Tulum awaits. An ancient walled city perched high on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea, Tulum was built by the Mayans and dates back to the pre-Columbian era. The city thrived during the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries, but fell following attack from the Spanish conquistadors. Today it's among the best-preserved of all coastal Mayan sites. Take a 45-minute guided tour of the site to learn about ancient Mayan civilization and hear how the walled fortress of Tulum served as a gateway to the heart of the Mayan Empire. Follow your tour with an hour of free time to explore independently.

An hour from Tulum lies the ancient Mayan village of Coba, surrounded by lush vegetation and large lagoons. It was once a busy commercial center and traded extensively with other Mayan settlements in the Quintana Roo area, and today boasts many impressive archaeological wonders. During your 1 hour guided tour, climb the tallest Mayan pyramid in the Yucatan region, the Nohoch Mul Pyramid, and enjoy panoramic views over the rainforest canopy from 140 feet (42 meters) high. Admire the engraved-stone buildings in the Mayan Ball Court and learn of the beliefs and lifestyles of the ancient Mayan people. Explore on your own for another hour after your tour.

After a long day of exploring ancient Mayan ruins, relax on the 2 hour drive back to your Cancun hotel.

Day 4

Uxmal Ruins tour

After hotel pickup in Merida by air-conditioned minivan, your first stop on the Yucatan Peninsula is Kabah - archeological site of a Mayan city that flourished around the year 800 AD. Situated in a series of low-lying hills, Kabah is known as the second largest religious center in the Puuc-style.

When you arrive, your guide will lead your small group on a one-hour tour of the grounds and enlighten you about the significance of each feature. See Kabah's beautiful Palace, located on a high esplanade forming a quadrangle, and visit the Codz Pop, or Palace of the Masks, famous for its impressive facade of more than 250 masks of the rain god, Chaac. Admire these figures, as well as statues of Mayan rulers, all finely cut from stone and positioned in a magnificent design.

Follow your guide through the Arch of Kabah, which marks the entrance to the Sacbe, an ancient path that links Kabah to Uxmal. Then, hop back in your vehicle for a short drive to Uxmal, where you'll spend three hours admiring impressive structures designed with geometrical figures and see more masks of the Mayan's most significant deity, Chaac.

At the Nunnery Quadrangle, whose friezes represent owls and serpents, learn about the meaning of the four multi-level buildings arranged around a central plaza. Look up at the oval-shaped Pyramid of the Magician (the Pyramid of the Soothsayer), unrivaled in the beauty of its precise design. View more than 100 images of Chaac on the facade of the Governor's Palace, where a central doorway was built in astronomical alignment with the planets.

You'll also visit the Choco Story Museum. Here, learn about the history of cocoa, its importance to the Mayas, the way it's cultivated and the traditional process to make chocolate. Then, explore the beautiful botanical gardens of the Hacienda Uxmal Hotel as you dine on a delicious lunch. In the afternoon, your guide will gather your small group for the return trip to Merida, where you'll be dropped off at your hotel.
