Duration
7 Days

Bringing together the best Mayan sites of the Yucatan Peninsula, including Calakmul, Palenque, Uxmal, and Chichen Itza, this trip through Mexico delves into the history of Central America’s most famous civilization on a round-trip journey from Cancun.

This 6-day Mexican vacation through Mayan Mexico takes you on a round trip from Cancun to Chicanna, Calakmul, Palenque, Campeche, Merida, Uxmal, and Chichen Itza. It features first-class accommodations, small group tours, and is ideal as an add-on to a beach stay in Cancun.

Start your journey in Cancun and head for Chicanna, stopping off at the seven-coloured waters of the Bacalar Lagoon along the way. In Chicanna, explore recently-discovered Mayan archaeological sites and marvel at the doors marked with animal-shaped masks. Continue to Calakmul, in the high jungle of the Yucatan, to see one of the most important Mayan sites on the peninsula. Among its many wonders are the hundreds of stelas (monoliths) scattered about the site, as well as the massive central monument that serves as a great viewing platform for the sea of green surrounding it.

In Palenque, you’ll explore one of the most beautiful spots in the country, venturing through temples in the midst of the jungle. Continue to Campeche, the colonial fort town meant to defend against pirates off the coast, before connecting to Merida, the White City, renowned for its colonial homes. From Merida, head on a day trip to the ruins of Uxmal to see the Mayan ruins of the Fortune-teller’s Pyramid and the Governor’s Palace before returning to Merida to tour the city and see the main landmarks like the Cathedral and the house of Francisco Montejo.

The final stops on your Mayan adventure are the Hacienda Sotuta de Peon, where you’ll travel back in time to the late 19th century and learn about the production of henequen thread, and the ruins of Chichen Itza, possibly the most famous Mayan site in Mexico and the Americas. Join a guide on a journey through some of the most important sites, including the Kukulcan Temple and the Observatory, before returning back to Cancun or the Riviera Maya to end your trip.

Cancun - Bacalar - Chicanna

On arrival into Cancun you are transferred to the hotel in Cancun where the tour leaves for Chicanna. On route, you will stop at the Bacalar Lagoon, also known as the "Lagoon of the Seven Colors" thanks to its water that reflects several colors, such as turquoise and jade, throughout its 50-kilometer extension. After lunch continue to Chicanna, located in the amazing area of the Bec River, which received its name from a particular Mayan architecture style and where you can see recently discovered archaeological sites surrounded by an amazing Mayan jungle.

Chicanna archaeological site, which means "House of the Serpent's Mouth" was only discovered in 1967 and stands out thanks to its doors marked with animal shaped masks. Structure II is quite special due to its huge zoomorphic mask that probably represents Itzamna, God of the Sun.

Day 4

Palenque - Campeche

Palenque, while growing in popularity for visitors is still somewhat quiet compared to the bigger sites of Uxmal, Tulum and Chichen-Itza and as such offers a relatively more serene experience.

The area displays beautiful Mayan work made in stone and stucco; this area is frequently recognized as one of Mexico's most beautiful places due to the ruins being enclosed by the Chiapanecan jungle. Its most important temple is called Templo de las Inscripciones (Temple of the Inscriptions), and it is here that explorers discovered Pakal's tomb, with his famous jade green mask.

Continue onto Campeche, which is the capital of Campeche State. Lunch in restaurant on route. Upon arrival into Campeche, you have a short visit of the ancient town, surrounded by fort walls and towers built to protect the city from the pirates. Campeche has a Colonial mood thanks to its gorgeous houses and austere churches. After visiting the city, you check-in at your hotel.
