Peruvian Amazon Jungle Experiences: Posada Amazonas

3-5 Days
Prices From:
US$ 515

Get back to nature and discover the wonders of the Amazon on this adventure into the rainforest. Staying at Posada Amazonas Lodge, you’ll explore a massive communal reserve and spot fascinating wildlife as you cruise along the river, climb to the jungle canopy, and hike along trails through the verdant underbrush.

This 3 to 5 day Peruvian vacation takes you on an adventure into the Amazon Rainforest. It features moderate accommodations, shared tours, and is a great add-on to a longer trip through Peru.

3-Day Itinerary

Your journey begins in Puerto Maldonado, where you’ll board a canoe and head up the Rio Tambopata to the Indigenous community of Infierno and eventually Posada Amazonas Lodge. Posada Amazonas Lodge is located on a private 2,000ha communal reserve that supports community efforts while also providing comfortable accommodations. You’ll stay in one of the lodge’s 30 rooms as you explore the jungle. After a briefing at the lodge, you’ll head on your first excursion into the Amazon. Get your bearings and enjoy a spectacular view 30 meters above the forest floor as you share the jungle canopy with toucans, parrots, and macaws. The next day, venture to Tres Chimbadas to see giant river otters as well as caiman and distinctive birds like hoatzin and horned screamers. If you’re a birdwatcher, you’ll enjoy a visit to a macaw clay lick to watch a feeding frenzy of tropical birds. After lunch, venture down the river to Centro Napo, a community organization dedicated to making medicines from forest plants. That evening after dinner, you can choose to hike into the jungle to see nocturnal animals that come to life when the sun sets. The next day, connect back to Puerto Maldonado.

4-Day Itinerary

Begin your Amazon adventure the same way as on the 3-day itinerary. However, you’ll have another full day to explore the communal reserve and enjoy time around the lodge. Head on additional hikes through the jungle to spot more colourful birds and fascinating reptiles, search for red howler monkeys among the canopy, or follow the trail to discover a bamboo forest in the midst of the jungle. At the end of your stay, connect back to Puerto Maldonado.

5-Day Itinerary

This 5-day itinerary is the same as the 4-day itinerary, except it adds on another free day at the lodge to further explore the jungle. Then connect back to Puerto Maldonado.

Day 1

Puerto Maldonado to Posada Amazonas Lodge

On your arrival into Puerto Maldonado you will be met and transferred by motorised canoe up river to your lodge in the jungle.

Skirting Puerto Maldonado, you will drive 20 km to the Tambopata River Port, entering the Native Community of Infierno. The port is a communal business. The forty-five-minute boat ride from the Tambopata Port to Posada Amazonas will take you into the Community's Primary Forest Private Reserve.

Upon arrival, the lodge manager will welcome you and brief you with important navigation and security tips. A twenty minute walk from Posada Amazonas leads to the 30 m scaffolding canopy tower. A bannistered staircase running through the middle provides safe access to the platforms above. From atop, you obtain spectacular views of the vast expanses of standing forest cut by the Tambopata River winding through the middle. Now and then toucans, parrots or macaws are seen flying against the horizon and mixed species canopy flocks land in the treetop next to you. A daily presentation on the Infierno ecotourism project is available every night from a staff member.

Day 2

Posada Amazonas Lodge

Tres Chimbadas is thirty minutes by boat and forty-five-minutes hiking from Posada Amazonas. Once there, you will paddle around the lake in a catamaran, searching for the resident family of nine giant river otters and other lakeside wildlife such as caiman, hoatzin and horned screamers.

Nearby is the famous Macaw clay lick. This clay lick is only a twenty minute walk from Posada Amazonas and from a blind located about twenty meters away you will see dozens of parrots and parakeets descend on most clear mornings to ingest the clay on a river bank. Species such as Mealy and Yellow headed Amazon, Blue-headed Parrot and Dusky headed Parakeet descend at this clay lick. The clay lick is most active at dawn and during the late mornings and mid afternoons.

After lunch, you will take a twenty-minute boat drive downriver leading you to a trail designed by the staff of the Centro Nape. The Centro Nape is a communal organization that produces medicines out of forest plants and administers them to patients who choose their little clinic. They have produced a trail which explains the different medicinal (and other) uses of selected plants.

After dinner you have the option of hiking out at night, when most of the mammals are active but rarely seen. It will be much easier to find frogs with shapes and sounds as bizarre as their natural histories.
