The former Inca Capital and Spanish colonial city of Cusco is our base for this great expedition, letting a city rich with culture, history, good restaurants, and active nightlife take centre stage your Peru vacation.

This 7-day Peru vacation focuses on the ancient Inca capital of Cusco, exploring the Sacred Valley and the fabled lost city of Machu Picchu in detail.

One of the world's best travel bargains, Cusco is rich on culture and history, as you'll discover on a half-day tour, once you've acclimatised to the altitude. From Cusco, travel through the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Here, you'll visit Pisac Market, an ideal place to purchase an authentic souvenir or two, and a photographer's dream. Visit Inca Fortress town of Ollantaytambo, before going on to famous Machu Picchu.

Plenty of mystery still shrouds the lost city of the Incas, but your guide will shed some light on what we do know as you explore the world's most famous mountaintop citadel. Enjoy time to explore on your own, or pre-book (essential) a climb up Huyana Picchu for an alternative view. Return to Cusco for one more night.

We return to Lima for a Colonial and Contemporary city tour, which includes stops at the most important architectural icons of the city. Too often forgotten, or dismissed as just a big, chaotic capital, Lima deserves a day or two on any Peru vacation, offering enchanting neighbourhoods such as Miraflores, home to the famous 'Love Park.'

Day 3

Authentic Sacred Valley Visit

Discover the "authentic" Sacred Valley of the Incas through this exciting day tour. The day begins with a visit to Inca's Balcony, beautifully terraced farm land with impressive views of the nearby weaving town of Chinchero. Having seen Chinchero from afar in its picturesque location within the Sacred Valley, you travel to the town itself. Home to 12 families that maintain the traditions of their forebears the town is now famous for its market and amazing examples of weaving and wools.

Your visit will take you into the homes of one of the families and hear you will have a first-hand demonstration of the ancient weaving techniques and the processes of extracting the colorful dies from the produce growing in the region. Photographic opportunities abound as your hosts are dressed in traditional costumes and the indigenous features only add to the authenticity of the town and your visit.

From here you travel further down the Sacred Valley to where the main road ends, and the famous fort town of Ollantaytambo is located. Strategically located as a choke point in the valley, the fort and village is a living Incan town with much of the original structure and irrigations systems still in functional use and which has been inhabited since the 13th century.

The town is also the central meeting place for porters being assigned to Inca trails which start from just outside the town as well as the main train station to and from Machu Picchu, so it is always a chaotic mix of locals, and travelers, colors, smells and activity. The fort that sits above the town and the valley. Dominates the region and it is one of very few locations that the Incan forces during the conquest, were able to defeat the Spanish in battle. With its "Andenes" (terraces dug into the slopes of mountains for agricultural use), Ollantaytambo was a highly effective fortress, that also served as a temple.
