Day 1

Puerto Maldonado to Sandoval Lake Lodge

On your arrival into Puerto Maldonado you will be met and transferred by motorised canoe up river to your lodge in the jungle.

NOTE: While the lodge is close to Puerto Maldonado, the trip there includes a 3 km (2 mile) walk from the Madre de Dios River, which can get muddy. Guests are provided with boots and you can ask for a rickshaw service for your luggage or for those with walking difficulties, to be taken aboard one.

Travelling to Sandoval Lake Lodge offers a rare opportunity to discover a lively biodiversity of birds, mammals, reptiles, insects and trees. Record-setting numbers of animal species are concentrated within small areas, and the variety of plant life is greater than almost anywhere in the world.

Day 2

Sandoval Lake Lodge

Sandoval Lake is a lake situated in the Sandoval Lake Reserve, within Amazon Rainforest, in the Madre de Dios Department, near a city of Puerto Maldonado.

The reserve refuges diverse animals, for example, giant river otters, turtles, black caimans, monkeys, birds such as a prehistoric bird Shansho, macaws, parrots, cormorants, kingfishers and others. The reserve also boasts with a specific, which is the Collpa de Palmeras, a special place where macaws and parrots fly down to eat dry palms that are rich in mineral salts, calcium, sodium, potassium, etc.

The days are spent exploring the jungle by foot or boat and the river system at night searching for caymans. Wake up very early to go to the surroundings of the Sandoval Lake where huge number of various palms grow in its water creating a wildlife rich marsh area. Look for the Macaw Palm Tree as it attracts various macaw species and other parrots to eat sawdust of its palms as it contains sodium, calcium, potassium and other minerals helping the birds to digest. Return to the lodge for breakfast.

Mid morning is spent observing stunning flora and fauna of the Sandoval Lake Reserve. Keep an eye out for monkeys, deer, wild boars, tapirs or spectacled bears, just to name a few. Return to the lodge for lunch then some free (down) time in the afternoon.
Late afternoon sees you board a canoe to cross the lake a prime location to witness the Amazonian sunset. At approximately 7 PM, you return to the lodge for dinner. After dinner head back out on the lake to spot caimans again!

Day 3

Sandoval Lake Lodge to Puerto Maldonado and onward travels

After breakfast, you are transferred by boat back to Puerto Maldonado and onto the airport for your onward travels.
