17 Day Santiago to Buenos Aires Cruise

Duration
17 Days
Prices From:
US$ 3,381

Round the bottom of the world, see (some of) the peaks of Patagonia, and visit the Falkland Islands on this unique cruise through the Straits of Magellan, ultimately disembarking in Buenos Aires.

Please see left bar for ship details and cruise info.

This 17-day cruise departs Valparaiso, the delightful port city neighbouring the Chilean capital of Santiago. It then follows one of the world’s most spectacular coastlines down to Ushuaia, gateway to Antarctica, before returning north to the pulsing, romantic cities of Montevideo and Buenos Aires.

If Buenos Aires is the ‘Paris of the South,’ then some would call Santiago the Berlin. Offbeat, edgy, and innovative, Chile’s capital offers plenty of history and culture to explore while keeping its gaze firmly fixed on the future. Consider a few extra days here before meeting the Norwegian Sun in Valparaiso. The port city is another of Chile’s essential stops with its own customs and identity, where the buildings spread out over the hillside like a colourful patchwork blanket.

A day at sea gives you plenty of time to get acquainted with the Norwegian Sun. Colourful and cheeky, this is a ship whose lively décor and entertainment is perfectly suited to a South America tour by sea. Enjoy a wide variety of dining options, lifestyle facilities including a fitness centre, jogging/walking track, and spa, a casino, fun activities and areas just for the kids, plus top notch evening entertainment.

Dock at Puerto Montt and…what? No, that’s not Mount Fuji. It’s Osorno, one of the most distinctive volcanoes in the Andes. Explore the nearby Lake District to immerse yourself in the local scenery, before going on to Puerto Chacabuco. You might think of this area as just a taste of Patagonia, characterised by striking fjords, icebergs and the peaks of the Andes. Afterwards, enjoy two days at sea, including a cruise through the Straits of Magellan.

Dock at Punta Arenas, a launch point for wilderness excursions throughout southern Chile. But even with limited time, there’s plenty to do in the town itself. Visit the museums and monuments devoted to the history and exploration of this beautiful region, or just explore at your leisure, basking in the spectacular mountain backdrop. The following day, dock in Argentina, and Ushuaia. Thought to be the world’s southern-most city, Ushuaia is South America’s gateway to the Antarctic, and marks the end of the Pan-American Highway.

Your next port is Stanley, capital of the Falkland Islands. Though forever known for the infamous conflict between Britain and Argentina, the Falklands offer so much more to the curious visitor. Stanley bills itself the world’s most southerly capital, and its compact size lends itself to a lot of sightseeing in a short space of time. Explore numerous historical sights, perhaps starting with the Falkland Islands Museum to get your bearings. Alternatively, stroll the nearby paths and see the wide variety of Falklands bird life.

After another day at sea, dock at Puerto Madryn, a favoured seaside destination with Argentine holiday-makers. The town also offers a gateway to the Peninsula Valdes, also known for its abundant animal visitors including whales, penguins, orcas, and seals. Take some time to explore, or swing by Punta Tombo Nature Reserve if you want to see some of the local wildlife. Sail on to Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay and one of South America’s lesser known marvels. Enjoy a full day of sightseeing, including a visit to the Establecimiento Juanico winery, and the Plaza Independencia.

Finally, dock and disembark in Buenos Aires, perhaps the most romantic and evocative city in South America. If it’s your first visit, be sure to book an extra few days to enjoy the city on its own. Visit Plaza de Mayo and pay your respects to ‘that balcony’ at the Casa Rosada. Immerse yourself in traditional Bohemian Buenos Aires in San Telmo (the ideal place to take in a Tango show), or rub shoulders with fashionable Portenos in the hip bars and restaurants of Palermo.
