Tikal, Uaxactun Ruins & Local Village Visit: 2 Day

2 Days
Prices From:
US$ 769

Explore the second largest ruined city in the world and discover the unique settlements that remain nearby today on this very special Tikal tour.

This 2-day visit to Tikal first takes you from Flores to the ruins and present day village of Uaxactun. The city is famous for its elaborate observatory, and innovative use of sunlight. Uniquely, Uaxactun survives today, albeit in a very different form. Learn about the resources collected and used in the area, and enjoy sunset drinks before camping (with all comforts included!) overnight in the jungle.

Day two is devoted to Tikal, marked by its towering pyramids and the colourful wildlife that lives in the nearby rainforest. Abandoned in the 10th century, Tikal is today the world’s second largest ruined city behind Angkor, with plenty to explore, having supported the Maya for up to 700 years. Star Wars fans will get an extra thrill from recognising the Yavin Rebel base – or at least, the towers that loomed above the trees to mark its location!

Day 1

Day 1

This morning, you'll travel from Flores to the ancient Maya ruins and remote village of UaxactĂșn (1 hour 45 minutes). Renowned for its elaborate astronomical observatory, the archaeological site comprises several partially restored temples positioned to coincide with the sunrise on key dates. You'll tour the site and explore the village while learning about the natural gum, allspice, and xate (used in floral arrangements) that locals collect from the area. At dusk, you'll head to a lookout tower for sunset drinks. Afterwards, you'll enjoy a delicious, locally made dinner before camping overnight in the jungle. The camping experience is comfortable (think tents, beds, and toilets) and a superb way to experience the wilds at night.
