Trujillo has hosted numerous national and international events and has a lively arts community. It is close to Chan Chan and the temples of the Sun and Moon, two major archaeological sites.
Peru’s third largest city has proven itself a ‘must-do’ on any visitor’s agenda. Spend 3 days discovering its colonial charm, fascinating temples and intriguing pre-Inca ruins.
See Chan Chan, the capital of the Chimu kingdom. Dating back to AD 850, this ruin was a thriving city of 30,000 people until it was destroyed by Inca conquest in AD 1470. You’ll also visit the Temple of the Sun, the largest pre-Columbian adobe structure in the Americas. The nearby Temple of the Moon is smaller, but better preserved. Both form parts of the ancient Moche city of Cerro Blanco.
On your last day, visit the dual pyramids of Huaja Rajada and the Royal Tombs of Sipan Museum, where a recreation of the tomb showcases the splendour of this ancient empire. The Sican Museum contains many artifacts of the period, demonstrating this culture’s exquisite metallurgical skills, among other crafts.
