Wonders of Peru & Iguassu Falls

Duration
9 Days
Prices From:
US$ 1,905

Focused on the ancient sights of Cuzco, Machu Picchu and the worlds largest waterfalls of Iguassu, this Peru and Brazil vacation puts you in touch with the regions traditional side before flying on to another great wonder of South America, the mighty Iguassu Falls.

This 11--day trip through South America takes you from Lima to incredible Iguassu Falls, visiting ancient ruins, the world’s highest lake and more en route.

Arrive in Lima, one of South America’s most underrated capitals, boarding your flight to Cusco on day two. In Cusco, a guided tour takes you through the highlights of the city’s Inca and colonial heritage. Visit Plaza de Armas, and Sacsayhuaman, the ancient Inca fort. Sip a sundowner as you overlook the former capital of this once great empire, then enjoy a full day at leisure to visit any sites you missed.

Most likely to be the highlight of your trip, Machu Picchu awaits! Board your scenic Vistadome train in Ollantaytambo, and ascend to one of the New World Wonders. Much is still unknown about the city’s original purpose, but you will draw your own conclusions as you admire the sheer innovation and spectacular surroundings that blessed it. An extensive tour takes you through the site, with lunch at a local restaurant before returning to Cusco.

Transfer to Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the world’s highest navigable lake. You’ll visit the Raqchi ruins en route, as well as Andahuaylillas village. Sailing out on to Lake Titicaca, visit the reed islands and the Uros floating islands, where you’ll meet the Uro people and learn about local traditions. Venture to Taquile Island for wonderful views over the lake before returning to Puno.

Fly on to Iguassu Falls, located on the border of Argentina and Brazil. Eleanor Roosevelt’s first glimpse of the Falls is said to have inspired the now famous words ‘Poor Niagara!’, and as you approach the Devil’s Throat on the Green Trail, it’s hard to argue. Catwalks over the river allow you to move in for a closer view. Your second day here is yours to spend as you wish. You may opt to explore the jungle paths, discovering spectacular Falls views for yourself, or take the Big Adventure Navigation Tour, which takes you along an exciting 4x4 trail through the jungle, ending in a boat trip on the turbulent Iguazu River, right up to the Devil’s Throat.

Return to Lima for an overnight stay before your departure. If time allows, consider visiting the Museo Larco, arguably the finest collection of Inca gold and silver in the world.

Day 4

Sacred Valley to Aguas Calientes

A full day excursion to the Chincheros and Ollantaytambo. With an early start, you drive through the fertile countryside of the Urubamba Valley to the colonial village of Chincheros. This traditional Andean town is known as 'the birthplace of the rainbow', and it has the full complement of photogenic attractions: Inca ruins, Andean village houses, an elaborate colonial church built on Inca foundations, and of course the lively weekly market. Please note: The main market day is Sunday. Other days the market is open but much smaller in scale.

Continuing down the valley and ever so slightly lower in altitude you head to the impressive archaeological complex of Ollantaytambo. Ollantaytambo is a massive citadel located 50 kilometers from Machu Picchu. The citadel served as both a temple and a fortress and the only battle at which the Incas held off the Spanish. You will then be transferred to the train station for train ride into Aguas Calientes near the ruins of Machu Picchu.

Day 8

Iguassu Falls - Argentina Side

Today is spent exploring the Argentinean side of the Falls with your guide. The tour begins at the Visitor Center where you board the train at Central Station, some 400 metres away from the main gate. The train travels along Sendero Verde (Green Trail) finishing at Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat) Station, the starting point of your journey. You will walk via the catwalks out and over the river, finally reaching Devil's Throat, the apex of the mighty Iguassu Falls.

It is a 70-metre-deep point where several branches of the Iguazu river converge, causing a violent but spectacular sight.

You will return to the station and re board the train to the Visitor Centre, and then to the start of the Upper Trail Walk. The Upper Circuit is a half-hour walk along a 1200- metre trail, with a low degree of difficulty and no stairs, which takes you deep into the jungle and over the precipice of the many falls on the Argentinean side.

Iguassu Falls - Brazil Side - Onward travels

These matter of fact details do nothing to describe the grandeur of the falls, the tremendous amount of water (an average of 553 cubic feet per second) thundering down 269 feet, the tropical location and the sheer beauty that led Eleanor Roosevelt to say, "Poor Niagara." Four times the width of Niagara Falls, Iguassu Falls are divided by various islands into separate waterfalls.

After your tour, there is a included transfer to the airport, or enquire into the many add ons and extensions available. (Flights not included in the trip price)
