7 Night Western Mediterranean from Barcelona to Barcelona

Duration
8 Days

Discover the Mediterranean’s most exciting ports on this week-long trip aboard the Norwegian Epic. Immerse yourself in the history and culture of Spain, Italy, and the French Riviera.

This 8-day voyage aboard the Norwegian Epic will leave you with a love of both cruise vacations and the Mediterranean. Combine historic sights, enchanting villages, and world class cities, enjoying state of the art luxury and entertainment onboard in between ports.

Begin your journey in Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, and one of the world’s most unique cities. Walk in the footsteps of Gaudi, Picasso, Dali, and countless others, or book a few extra days here to discover their legacy in detail. Perhaps visit the Picasso Museum to explore the master’s early work, or immerse yourself in the architectural genius of Modernisme, which gave Barcelona much of its distinctive character.

A day at sea gives you a chance to enjoy the offerings of the Norwegian Epic itself. Entertainment is unparalleled with two of Broadway’s hottest shows playing onboard. Over 20 different dining options will keep foodies happy, while the vessel’s unique studio accommodations for one make solo travellers feel just as comfortable as couples or families travelling together.

Dock in Naples, on Italy’s Amalfi Coast. A famously gritty, authentic Italian city steeped in history and amazing food, this is perhaps the best cultural immersion you can have in central Italy. If you don’t mind rubbing shoulders with the tourists, spend your day visiting the fascinating nearby ruins of Pompeii. Otherwise, roam the intimate streets and piazzas of Naples, enjoying the centuries-old cathedrals, castles, and more. Oh, and be sure to have pizza for lunch, even if you don’t particularly like it at home.

Your next port is Rome – timeless, peerless, and endlessly rewarding. No tourist line can take away the magnificence of the Colosseum or Forum, or dull the cultural riches of the Vatican Museums. Still, with only one day here, you don’t want to spend it waiting in line, so consider just walking the streets, visiting the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain, or pull up a chair and an espresso and watch the sometimes chaotic street life race by. The big ticket attractions have lasted for centuries if not longer, and will still be here when you return for a longer visit.

Like Rome, a day is nowhere near long enough to see Tuscany in full. But dock in Pisa, transferring to Florence for a day’s sightseeing. Fortunately, many of the city’s best sights including Piazza del Duomo, Michelangelo’s David, and Santa Croce are all within walking distance of each other, so you can enjoy much of what puts Florence near the top of so many ‘favourite cities’ lists in that one day.

There’s more to Cannes than the world’s most prestigious film festival. This French Riviera city embodies the region at its most luxurious year-round. But if you haven’t turned up with a platinum credit card, don’t worry. A day in port is a great way to see this famous city on a budget. Even if it starts to feel a little ‘look, don’t touch,’ the view is pretty great, with cobblestone alleys and stairways emptying out onto palm-lined boulevards, with sports cars parked in front of palatial homes. You can experience the energy of the Riviera without spending a centime.

Finally, walk in the 2,100-year-old footsteps of the Romans in Palma, Majorca. This is a great port in which to simply explore the old streets, take a leisurely lunch, and slow your holiday to the Spanish pace at which it began. Then return to Barcelona for departure, or for an extra few days of exploration.
