Active Iceland Scheduled Self-drive

Duration
10 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,586

Self-drive your way around one of the world’s most spectacular countries on this Iceland tour. A round trip from Reykjavik, it takes you to spectacular glaciers, waterfalls and lagoons.

For the independent minded traveller who likes to make up their own mind as to the itinerary they would enjoy and the pace at which they wish to travel, Goway makes it easy to plan a vacation. Whether it is a self-drive car with pre-booked accommodation or a rental car, we have several suggested itineraries in Iceland which lend themselves perfectly to this type of arrangement. We also offer self-drives in other parts of the world.

This 10-day Iceland self-drive sets out from Reykjavik, combining the culture of this unique country with its most spectacular natural sights.

Spend a night in Reykjavik, one of the most modern and beloved small capitals in Europe, before setting out for Thingvellir National Park, home to the world’s first parliament. Then take in the great Geysir geothermal area, where mighty Strokkur, shoots its towering stream of water every few minutes. End the day at the famous Gulifoss waterfall. Set out for your next day’s adventures in Landmannalaugar, where you can bathe in the geothermal pools surrounded by rhyolite mountains. It’s one of the most colourful landscapes in Iceland.

Go on to roam Thorsmork, the meeting point between three glaciers, and the site of Iceland’s most infamous volcano, Eyjafjallajokull. Things are quieter on the mountain these days, with magnificent walks across glacial rivers. You’ll also visit the Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls. Then enter Skaftafell National Park, known for its glacial lagoon, and Europe’s largest ice cap, Vatnajokull.

Explore the East Fjords, where the wilder side of Iceland enchants with its diversity of birdlife and landscapes. Visit a local fishing village for a taste of life in this remote part of the country. Then cross the Modrudalsoraefi desert to Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall, thought to flow into the hoof-print of pagan god Odinn’s horse. Take a whale watching tour in the afternoon if you’re so inclined.

Visit the Lake Myvatn area and take in the amazing natural formations and craters, including the explosive ‘Hell’ crater. More colours await at Namaskarth pass, before visiting the Gothafoss waterfall, and staying overnight at Akureyri, Iceland’s second largest settlement. On your last full day, lean about Iceland’s horses at Skagafjorthur, and explore the nature reserve of Hrutey Island. Then stop in at the historical town of Borganes before returning to Reykjavik.
