Alpine Railway Journey (Small Group): Milan to Munich

Duration
10 Days
Prices From:
US$ 4,389

Travel by train and discover not only the dramatic scenery of the Alps but also the iconic cities of Milan and Munich. Also have stays in Stresa on Lake Maggiore, Zermatt located under the Matterhorn and beautiful Lucerne with its medieval centre and mountain backdrop.

On this Europe tour, small group means small group. With an average of 10 participants, and a maximum of 16 on each departure, you’ll feel less like a tourist and more like a traveller, discovering Europe with friends at your side.

What better way to enjoy the Alps as you wind your way through Northern Italy, Switzerland and then head into Southern Germany. Train travel is the ideal way to discover the dramatic scenery of the Alps. You just sit back, relax and take in the ever-changing landscapes from the comfort of your seat. Starting in Milan, after a night in this delightful city and a walking tour to visit the highlights, you board your first train. Depart for Stresa, a small Italian town on the scenic and attractive Lake Maggiore, the second largest lake in Italy sharing a border with Switzerland. Stresa will charm you with its lemon and olive groves and lovely gardens. Have a ferry ride around the lake in sight of the surrounding Alps.

After overnight in Stresa, join the train heading to Zermatt in Switzerland with more views of the Alps en route. Zermatt is known as a major winter sports resort but is equally enticing at other times of the year. It is set below the snowcapped Matterhorn. On arrival, enjoy free time to stroll around the town. Stay overnight here.

The following day brings a very scenic train ride across the Alps to Lucerne through tunnels and over bridges. This journey will show you the Alps up close and personal.

Enjoy a 2 night stay in Lucerne situated at the north end of Lake Lucerne with its background of snowcapped mountains and its medieval old town surrounded by city walls. While here, after a short boat ride on the lake, you will take a local train to the top of nearby Mount Pilatus on the world’s steepest cog railway. After taking in the dramatic views from this vantage point, you will join an aerial cableway down to Kriens from where it is a short drive back to Lucerne. The afternoon includes a walking tour of Lucerne.

The next morning brings a train ride to Zurich where you will have a walking tour of the main sites before continuing into Germany and arriving at Munich, your base for the next 4 nights. Munich is the third largest city in Germany and is famous for its beautiful architecture, culture and its annual Oktoberfest beer celebration. The city’s architecture is stunning with its mix of historic buildings and modern architecture. It is Germany's most prosperous city and one of the fastest growing.

Your first day in Munich will be spent taking an orientation tour visiting some of the city’s iconic sights plus some free time to explore further on your own.

The following day, head out of the city on a short train trip to the famous 19th Century Romanesque Schloss Neuschwanstein Castle. Enjoy exploring this very extensive castle learning about its history and soaking up the atmosphere.

Your final full day in Munich is totally free to further enjoy this wonderful city.
