This 8-day cruise through Andalusia in Southern Spain emphasises all that makes this corner of Europe unique.
Settle into your cabin in Seville, then enjoy a guided walk to get your bearings in this beautiful city – which you’ll be returning to before the cruise is done. Then set sail for Cadiz on the southern coast. On the way, enjoy views of Donana National Park, and Sanlucar de Barrameda. On reaching Cadiz, take a night-time tour of the city almost entirely surrounded by sea. Set out to enjoy the daytime view in the morning, then cruise to El Puerto de Santa Maria. This is the gateway to Jerez, the byword for vibrant culture in Andalusia. Wine, horses, and flamenco music are all key parts of the city’s identity. You’ll visit the cathedral, Alcazar palace, and a working ganaderia, where bulls are raised.
Head to the Isla Minima, passing through Donana National Park, which you’ve seen from a distance up until now. Take a hacienda tour on the banks of the Guadalquvir, and see an equestrian show. The following day, enjoy a guided trip through this unspoiled wildlife area. For bird-watchers, this will be a highlight day, as an amazing variety of species thrive here. Return to Seville in the afternoon and enjoy more time to explore.
Time for a side trip to Granada, one of the liveliest cities in Spain, and home to the famous Alhambra palace. European and Moorish influences blend seamlessly throughout this region, but nowhere more so than in the Alhambra. The architects of this spectacular complex held one rule above all others – every part of the structure should be decorated, no matter how big or small. Throughout the Alhambra, there are countless arches, pillars, and other elements serving no purpose other than decoration. Beauty was paramount, and it’s that beauty that draws visitors today. Return to Seville for a flamenco show in the evening.
The last full day of your itinerary takes you to Corboda, where Christian and Muslim influences come together in a most literal way at the Mosque-Cathedral. This is one of the finest examples of Moorish architecture in the world, distinguished by its ‘forest’ of 856 interior columns. See more of Coboda’s spiritual side in the old Jewish Quarter, where the winding, narrow streets and alleys create a labyrinth of a different sort. Return for one more evening in Seville before you depart.
