Athens and Crete Explorer

Duration
7 Days
Prices From:
US$ 1,580

MODERATE | TAILOR-MADE: Visit Greek's famous capital, Athens, and its largest island, Crete, on this 7-day program. In Athens, tour the iconic Acropolis and head to nearby Delphi to see the home of the ancient Oracle, before jetting to the island of Crete where you can explore its capital, Heraklion, and enjoy an excursion to Spinalonga, the Leper colony!

This 7-day Greece vacation takes you from Athens to the Cretan capital of Heraklion.

As it should for a Greece vacation, your adventure begins in Athens, the landmark city that has graced the rest of the world with history and culture for several millennia. A morning city tour will get you acquainted with the Athenian highlights, showcasing the ruins from the 5th century B.C. that continue to draw people to the city. On your tour, you’ll pass from Constitution Square to the House of Parliament, visit the Panathenaic Stadium where the first Olympics were held in 1896 and the Temple of Zeus before hitting up the famous Acropolis, with its many temples and iconic Parthenon.

When you’re not touring Athens’ historical sites, you can take in its more contemporary pleasures. You’ll find entertainment a-plenty in Gazi, but no matter where you wander, you’ll stumble across incredible food, fashion, and nightlife. While in Athens, you’ll also take advantage of the location to head to Delphi, the site of the ancient Oracle that could foretell the future. You’ll tour the archaeological site of this religious centre and learn more about Ancient Greece at the Delphi Museum.

Your Greece vacation continues on from Athens, taking you to Crete and its capital of Heraklion. Also known as Iraklio, Heraklion is Greece’s fifth largest city and Crete’s administrative centre. You can spend your days on the island exploring the city, wandering through the pedestrian city centre full of 15th-century buildings or shopping along the new waterfront. You can also take advantage of the city’s prime location to explore the rest of Crete, strolling along coastal cliffs, swimming off pristine beaches, and exploring the historical treasures of this island that gave birth to Minoan culture over 4,000 years ago. The only must-do on Crete is to enjoy the food, as the Cretan combination of fresh seafood, homemade cheeses, and local wine is considered one of the healthiest (and tastiest) diets in the world. It’s one of the great pleasures of visiting Crete and the highlight of this Greece vacation.

The Island - Spinalonga BBQ

This once-in-a-lifetime experience brings you to the sparkling sea of the Mirabello Bay in East Crete. Luxury air-conditioned coaches will deliver you to the village of Elounda - certainly one of the most beautiful locations on the island.

After a short cruise across the clear blue waters we reach the tiny island of Spinalonga. With its amazingly rich history, Spinalonga is a truly magical place. Due to its strategic location at the entrance to Elounda Bay, the Venetians created a fortified stronghold on Spinalonga - 'The Rock' - in the 16th Century AD. This fort protected East Crete from invasion by pirates and its extremely strong walls, even after so many cannon ball strikes, stand proud to this day. In the middle of the 17th century Spinalonga was attacked and conquered by the Turkish Ottoman Empire and remained a Turkish stronghold until the liberation of Crete in 1821. In 1903, historical circumstances gave Spinalonga another role, that of Leper colony. For more than half a century the unfortunate 'living dead' were taken to live out their lives in an isolated community upon Spinalonga. The village with its tiny houses, shops, church, workshops and sanitarium still stands today. British author Victoria Hislop has immortalized the heartbreaking story of the lepers in her internationally acclaimed book 'The Island' and the story, based on true fact, has now been made into a film using Elounda. And the village of Plaka across the water as its setting. Your professional tour guide will escort you onto the island and you will hear all about the long history of this fascinating place. Close your eyes and imagine, listen to the sea and taste the salt water on your lips and you will be transported back in time in an experience you will never forget.

After your visit to Spinalonga continue on your cruise across the bay and you will have the opportunity to relax and enjoy the calm, crystal clear sea at Kolokytha. Here your crew will prepare a delicious barbeque while you swim and relax under the Cretan sun. Enjoy a refreshing glass of Ouzo perhaps, or a cold beer or soft drink from the bar.

On your return take time for a stop at the picturesque town of Saint Nicholas where you may take a stroll around the 'bottomless' lake, the pretty harbor and cosmopolitan shops and tree-lined avenues. Enjoy a relaxing coffee in any of the lakeside cafes and sit back and watch the world go by in this beautiful setting.
