Spend almost two weeks exploring a stunning region along the Danube River during a magical time of year. Cruising from Vienna to Nuremberg, you’ll visit world-famous Christmas markets, explore centuries of fascinating world history, and sample local delicacies wherever you go.

This 13-day Germany vacation takes you through Central Europe for a magical Christmas cruise passing from Vienna to Nuremberg.

Your Austrian vacation begins in Vienna, the nation’s capital and the newly-crowned Most Liveable City in the World. Erstwhile capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and home to the Habsburg Dynasty, Vienna is a treasure trove of historical wonders. A historical city tour will showcase some of the best landmarks of the past, including the State Opera House, Parliament Building, the Habsburgs’ winter residence, the Hofburg, and Schonbrunn Palace, home to Maria Theresia and other Habsburg royals during the empire’s heights.

You’ll then board the AmaCerto, your home on the Danube for the next week. Stay in one of the vessel’s spacious staterooms and enjoy the many on-board amenities of this elegant ship, including the heat pool with a swim-up bar on the Sun Deck and the speciality restaurant, The Chef’s Table, which boasts unbeatable cuisine on your river journey. Before leaving Vienna, you’ll spend a day seeing the city’s Christmas markets at the Rauthaus (Town Hall), Karlsplatz, and Schonbrunn Palace.

Venture along the Danube River and enter the Wachau Valley, where you’ll stop off at Durnstein and have your choice of day-time excursions, including a walking tour through the cobblestone streets of the old town, or a visit to a local apricot boutique. Later that day, pop into Melk to see the famous abbey before continuing to Linz. This gorgeous city defined by its intricate Christmas crèches is yours to explore on your choice of tour. Head through the city centre and visit the Mozart House, where he wrote the Linz Symphony in three days. Alternatively, head to nearby Salzburg to see the Christmas market and marvel at Austria’s most beautiful town in all its wintry glory.

Cross the border into Germany and stop at Passau, a former trading centre that is known as the “Venice of Bavaria.” Marvel at the city’s Baroque architecture as you head to the Christmas Market in St. Stephen’s Square. End your time in Passau by strolling through the streets to visit boutique shops and admire the Bavarian-style homes. Continue to Regensburg, one of the best-preserved medieval cities in all of Europe. On a guided walking tour through the Old Town, you’ll see the ancient Roman gate, Porta Praetoria, as well as the Christmas Market that transforms the Old Town into a holiday spectacle. That evening, head to other Christmas Markets in Thurn and at Taxis Castle before continuing to your final stop, Nuremberg.

Nuremberg is Bavaria’s second-largest city and one of the nation’s most important historical centres. During the Middle Ages, it was the centre of the Holy Roman Empire and in the 20th century, it became ground zero for the rise of Nazism. On a city tour, you’ll explore the city’s vast historical importance as you walk the ramparts of the Imperial Castle and pass by landmarks of World War II. Later that day, finish off your Christmas journey with a visit to the Christkindlesmarkt, one of the most famous Christmas markets in the world, which attracts over a million people each year.

You’ll disembark in Nuremberg and spend a few more days in the city to experience all that it has to offer. Visit the Old Town and tour Gothic churches before taking a cooking class to learn to make Nuremberg Bratwursts, sampling your creations at class’s end. The next day, head on a history tour of World War II, visiting Courtroom 600, where Nazi war criminals stood trial after the war’s end, and the Documentation Centre, a museum built on the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds. At the end of your stay, head to the airport to continue your onward journey.
