Baltic Biking: Vilnius to Tallinn

Duration
10 Days
Prices From:
US$ 1,060

Explore medieval old towns and pastoral countryside on this biking tour through the Baltic. Passing from Vilnius to Tallinn, you’ll explore the historical centres of the Baltic capitals, visit medieval castles and palaces, and enjoy daily bike trips through the gorgeous northeastern European countryside.

This 10-day Baltic vacation lets you cycle through the cities, towns, and national parks of the Baltic as you travel from Vilnius to Tallinn. It's a perfect trip for active travellers.

Your Lithuania vacation begins in Vilnius, the nation’s capital. Founded in the 14th century and home to Europe’s largest baroque old town, which consists of 1,200 medieval buildings and 48 churches, Vilnius is overwhelmingly gorgeous and too-often overlooked on European vacations. Tour the Old Town to see neoclassical Vilnius Cathedral, iconic Gediminas’ Tower, and the Gates of Dawn, a city gate that’s one of the country’s most significant monuments. Afterwards, head to Trakai, the nation’s medieval capital, to enjoy a 15km biking tour before heading to Kanaus to explore the Old Town and visit the Gothic Cathedral.

Continue on to Palanga to visit the Botanical Gardens and the Amber Museum located in the former Tiskevicius Palace. Bike 30km to Klaipeda, a formerly-German town that only became a part of Lithuania in 1923. You’ll see the medieval guild houses and visit Theatre Square. The next day, head down the Curonian Spit, a thin, 98km-long sliver of land that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. Your final destination on your Lithuania vacation is Nida, a popular resort town just before the Russian border. You’ll explore the nearby sand dunes before biking 30km to Juodkrante before returning to Klaipeda and heading over the Latvian border.

Your Latvia vacation begins in Liepaja, where you’ll explore the Old Town before embarking on a 25km biking tour through Kemeri National Park. You’ll then head to the famous sea resort of Jurmala to spend the rest of your day admiring the famous wooden architecture of the town and taking advantage of the sandy beaches. Next: enter Riga, the Latvian capital and largest capital in the Baltic. Riga is known for its medieval architecture and lively market life. Explore the Old Town to see Gothic spires and Art Nouveau facades as well as popular landmarks like Riga Castle, the Dome Cathedral, and the red brick Brother of Blackheads building.

Continue on to Saulkrasti and bike 30km to Sigulda, another popular Latvian resort. You’ll explore the ruins of Episcopal Castle as well as the Castle of the Knights of the Sword. Head on to Cesis, where you’ll spend the day exploring the cobblestoned streets and green hills of Latvia’s most adorable town. You’ll visit the medieval castle and see the erstwhile stronghold of the Livonian Order. The next day, head to the university town of Tartu to explore the Old Town and the famous university before embarking on a 40km biking tour from Kolka to Raja. At day’s end, you’ll pass into Lahemaa National Park. The following morning you’ll cap off your bike trips with a 45km circuit from Vihula to Kasmu along the Kasmu Peninsula.

Close out this Baltic vacation by venturing into Estonia, passing through the northern forests on route to Tallinn, a city that combines medieval history with modern eccentricity. Tallinn has garnered something of a reputation as the Baltic’s party capital, but its classical architecture remains one of the highpoints of a visit here. You’ll tour the Old Town of Vanalinn to see the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky, Toompea Castle, and the domed Cathedral of St. Mary. While in town, you can also take advantage of the booming arts and crafts scene and indulge in the city’s famous nightlife.

This European vacation lets you explore medieval old towns while also staying active with invigorating cycling trips through beautiful landscapes.
