Best of Bavaria: Munich to Munich

Duration
6 Days
Prices From:
US$ 3,557

See the best of Bavaria on this brief tour through Germany’s south. Take in the historical importance of Nuremberg before swinging south to marvel at the charms of Konigsee and Neuschwanstein before ending your tour where it began in the gregarious home of Oktoberfest, Munich.

This 6-day trip takes you through the fairytale state of Bavaria in Germany’s southeast.

Heading out from Munich, your Germany vacation experiencing the best of Bavaria starts in Nuremberg, the state’s second largest city. Nuremberg has been at the centre of much of Germany’s history. In the Middle Ages it was the centre of the Holy Roman Empire and seat of most German kings. During the Renaissance it became a hub for artistry, with Albrecht Durer the most famous of its artistic offspring. It led Germany into the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century and was ground zero for the rise of Nazism in the early 20th century. With all this history, you could get lost touring the city’s many churches and historical centres. While most of the city was destroyed during World War II, the citizens painstakingly recreated its classical buildings, allow you access to Nuremberg Castle and the Gothic Frauenkirche, which acts as the setting for the popular Christkindlesmarkt or Christmas market that attracts over one million people each December.

From Nuremberg, head southeast to the Austrian border to where the rivers Danube, Inn, and Ilz meet. There you’ll find Passau and tour its baroque Altstadt or Old Town. Traditionally Passau was an important trading centre for Bohemian salt, Europe’s “white gold.” As such, it wears the styles of many cultures, most notably Italian, which has garnered it the name of “Venice of Bavaria.” Be sure to visit the Baroque cathedral to get a true sense of the city’s glamour; the cathedral is also home to the world’s largest church organ.

After Passau turn west and south and continue to Berchtesgaden in the shadow of six mountains. This alpine village is as picturesque as they come; all timber-framed houses, wooden steeples, cobblestone paths, and rolling hills. Dip down to Konigsee to see Germany’s loveliest lake before heading into the hills to tour the Eagle’s Nest, Hitler’s infamous mountain retreat. Continue west from Passau to come to Fussen, sitting at the foot of the Alps. The town mainly serves as a gateway to the castles of King Ludwig II, but stop by St. Mang’s Abbey to learn about the town’s other claim to fame: violinmaking.

Of course, no trip to Bavaria is complete without a visit to Neuschwanstein. You’ll think you’ve walked into a Disney fairy tale as you explore this lavish creation of Bavaria’s Swan King. Then head on to Munich to complete your Germany tour. Munich may be Germany’s third largest city, but it boasts a small-town atmosphere and is extremely walkable. Get acquainted with its history by heading to Marienplatz and admiring the architecture. The Neues Rathaus or New Town Hall is a gorgeous neo-Gothic building with a massive 90-metre façade. Visit at 11am, noon or 5pm to witness its Glockenspiel come to life. It’s the largest Glockenspiel in the world, bringing to life 32 life-size figurines for a musical performance during the chiming of the hour. Don’t let your trip to Munich end without feasting on some bratwurst and Hefeweizen. Every day might not be Oktoberfest, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy Munich’s amazing food and beer all year round!
