The Black Forest & Romantic Germany: Frankfurt to Munich

Duration
8 Days
Prices From:
US$ 1,366

See Germany at its most romantic, stepping into the land of iconic castles and fairy tales as you embark on this first-class, shared trip from Frankfurt to Munich. See the university town of Heidelberg, soak in the baths of Baden-Baden, and explore the magical Black Forest before taking to the Alpine Road.

Shared with a small group of fellow globetrotters, this 8-day escorted trip takes you down Germany’s Romantic Road, from the country’s commercial powerhouse, Frankfurt, to Munich, the capital of Bavaria. Along the way, cruise down the Rhine, stop in at medieval villages and traditional spa towns, see the castles of Bavaria’s ‘Mad King,’ and explore Europe’s most storied forest.

One of Germany’s most underrated cities, Frankfurt is too often dismissed as no more than Germany’s front door. Arrive early and explore perhaps the country’s best collection of museums outside Berlin, or people watch in The Hauptwache, shaking off the jetlag with a local beer or coffee as you watch ‘Bankfurt’ go by. Join your guide and travel companions for a welcome dinner, then get a good night’s sleep for your day trip to Rudesheim, where you’ll board a Rhine cruise and enjoy a wine tasting.

Set out for Heidelberg, visiting its famous castle and exploring the city centre, soaking up the energy of Germany’s oldest university town. Then go on to Baden-Baden, famous for its thermal baths, before overnighting in Freiburg. The following day, return to the Rhine, following the border with France to Colmar and Strasbourg, where French and German cultures come together, producing among other things some of Europe’s finest wines.

Time to explore the Black Forest! Learn about traditional cuckoo clock production, sample some Black Forest ham and cheese, and take the Alpine Road if weather permits for some spectacular scenery on your way to Schloss Neuschwanstein, the legendary castle of ‘mad’ King Ludwig II. This wasn’t the king’s primary residence however. That honour goes to Schloss Linderhof, which you’ll visit in the afternoon. Return to Fussen for the night before setting out for Munich.

The colourful capital of Bavaria is the quintessential image of all things German, despite the fact that Bavarians have a culture, cuisine, architecture, and identity quite separate to the rest of the country. See Marienplatz civic square with its famous glockenspiel, then explore Munich at your leisure after a tour of the main sights. Stop by the Residenz for more palatial splendour, pop into Hofbrauhaus even if it’s not Oktoberfest, feast your eyes on art in the Kunstareal, or rev your car lover’s curiosity at BMW Welt and Museum, located right next to Olympiapark on Munich’s edge.

Transfer to the airport for departure the following day, or stay on to enjoy all Munich has to offer.
