Castles, Coasts and Celts: Cardiff to Anglesey

Duration
8 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,749

See the best of what Wales has to offer on this small-group tour through the country. Journey from Cardiff to Anglesey to explore quaint villages and admire stunning coastlines. Head into the Welsh mountains, visit medieval castles, and see the country through the eyes of a local.

This 8-day Welsh vacation takes you to the most popular sights in the country. It features moderate and first-class accommodations, escorted small group tours, and is perfect for first-time visitors to Wales.

Your trip to Wales begins in Cardiff, the port capital along the nation’s south coast. The Welsh capital since 1955, Cardiff is renowned for its compact size and stunning architecture, which consists of everything from Gothic castles in the city centre to ultramodern designs along the waterfront. In the company of a local guide, you’ll head on a foodie tour through the city, sampling everything from crempog to a glass of cider. You’ll then visit Cardiff Castle before having the evening to yourself. Leave the city and head to the Pembrokeshire Peninsula, one of the most gorgeous coastlines in the United Kingdom, and visit the small town of Laugharne, where the poet Dylan Thomas spent the final years of his life. Continue to St. Davids, the smallest city in Britain, to see the cathedral that enshrines St. David and the ruins of the Bishop’s Palace.

In the coastal university town of Aberystwyth, explore the seaside shops of the ancient market town and visit the National Library of Wales before continuing to the Vale of Rheidol Steam Railway and visiting the village of Devil’s Bridge in the Cambrian Mountains. Hike to nearby waterfalls and experience the rural beauty of alpine Wales. Continue further into the mountains and venture through Snowdonia National Park, home to the tallest mountain in England and Wales. While in the park, you’ll also visit the peak of the Snowdon Mountain Railway and tour the National State Museum.

On the final leg of your journey, travel to the island of Anglesey to see the 13th-century castle before continuing to the town with the longest name in Europe: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. After trying to pronounce this unfathomably-long name yourself, you’ll stop in Caernarfon to see the castle constructed by King Edward I before reaching the town of Llandudno, where you’ll have one last evening before connecting to your onward destination the following morning.
