Christmas on the Danube River: The Great Capitals & their Celebrations

5 Days
Prices From:
US$ 1,147

This classic Europe cruise along the Danube sets out from historic Vienna, taking in three of the continent’s great capitals for the ultimate short trip through Central Europe in the holiday season.

Please see LEFT BAR for ship details and other cruise info.

This 5-day cruise departs one of Europe’s great imperial cities, Vienna, travelling up the Danube to its historic sister-city, Budapest. Enjoy both cities, as well as neighbouring Bratislava, Slovakia, in full holiday livery as the warmth of the local culture chases away your December chills.

Take a guided tour of Vienna, admiring the architecture of the Habsburg years, and roaming the local Christmas markets in front of city hall. For over six centuries, Vienna ruled over one of Europe’s largest empires, which is still evident in the city’s architecture today. With your spare time, consider ducking into a Viennese coffee house to experience another important part of the city’s culture.

Sail on to Budapest. One of many cities touted ‘the Paris of the East,’ Hungary’s capital backs up that claim with astonishing Gothic Revival buildings such as its parliament, which illuminate the Danube after dark. Take a guided tour of this complex and beautiful capital, before enjoying free time in the afternoon. Stroll up Andrassy to iconic Heroes Square, or cross the Chain Bridge and take the funicular up to Castle Hill.

Arrive in Bratislava in the afternoon, and take a guided walk through the little-known capital of Slovakia. Set between the Carpathians and the Danube, this unassuming city is one of Europe’s hidden delights, particularly over the holidays, as its Christmas market comes alive. Enjoy a gala evening as you depart for Vienna, where you’ll disembark the following morning.
