Christmas Markets Cruise on the Rhine: Cologne to Cologne

7 Days
Prices From:
US$ 1,336

Celebrate Christmas on the famous Rhine River on this cruise through the picturesque cities of Cologne, Speyer, and Strasbourg along the river. On this Christmas vacation, you'll visit a Christmas Market, celebrate with a Christmas feast, and explore medieval old towns as they're transformed into winter wonderlands.

This 7-day Germany cruise takes you through the Rhineland to celebrate the Christmas season in Cologne, Speyer, Strasbourg, and Mainz.

Your Germany vacation begins in Cologne, a trading centre with over 2,000 years of history. Originally founded by the Romans, the city showcases a blend of Roman, medieval, and postmodern architecture. In Cologne, you'll board the Amadeus Silver II, your 4-star home for the next week. This 135m-long vessel is equipped with 84 large cabins and ample public areas where you can admire the views of the river and the picturesque winter landscapes you'll pass through. Park yourself in the Café Vienna and watch the winter countryside pass you by as you enjoy a hot drink.

Begin your cruise down the Rhine and make for Koblenz, at the conflux of the Mosel and Rhine Rivers. Take a guided walking tour to see the landmarks of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, including the Basilica of St. Castor and Koblenz Fortress. Then return to the ship and pass through the breathtaking landscapes of Wachau, perhaps the most beautiful region of the Rhine River. Make for Speyer on Christmas Eve, where you'll explore this former imperial town and visit the Christmas Market to celebrate the season. After returning to the ship, you'll help decorate the Christmas tree and celebrate the holidays on board with carols and a Christmas feast. You can even head into Speyer to the Cathedral to attend evening mass if you wish.

On Christmas Day, continue your Germany cruise into Strasbourg, the capital of the Alsace region and a wonderful city blending French and German cultures. Experience the city's iconic atmosphere and explore the streets filled with half-timbered homes. After seeing the famous Strasbourg Cathedral, you'll return to the ship in the evening. Spend the day after Christmas in Mainz, at the meeting of the Rhine and Main Rivers. Tour the gorgeous medieval city to see the windows of St. Stephan Cathedral and the red sandstone bricks of the Romanesque Mainz Cathedral. You'll also tour the birthplace of print at the Gutenberg Musuem, where Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press in the mid-15th century. That evening, return to the boat for a Captain's Gala, which celebrates the wonderful season on the river.

Close out your trip to Germany by returning to Cologne, where you'll learn about its thousands of years of history and tour the churches and ruins, including Cologne Cathedral, arguably the most popular attraction in all of Germany. After admiring the mosaic of Roman Dionysus and shopping the wonderful boutiques and stores of the old town, you'll return to the boat. The next day, say farewell after breakfast and disembark.

This Christmas vacation works well as an add-on to a larger exploration of Germany in the winter months.
