Cruise along Europe’s longest river and leisurely soak up the charm, history and culture of Central Europe. Experience old Passau, medieval Regensburg, historic Linz, the wine village of Duernstein, Slovakia’s fascinating Bratislava and iconic Budapest.

The Danube River flows through 10 countries. On this itinerary, the cruise covers 4 (Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary) and is Europe’s longest river after the Volga in Russia. 

Board your cruise ship in Passau, Germany and begin with a tour to Regensburg, one of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe. Walk its streets and observe the mansions of wealthy patrician families. Note the beautiful old bridges that span the Danube. From Regensburg, travel by road to Weltenburg, home to the Benedictine Abbey of Weltenburg. Visit Mount Michaelsburg with its classic monument, the Hall of Liberty modelled after the Parthenon in Athens. Walk through a nature reserve and call in at the oldest monastery brewery in Bavaria to sample a dark beer. Later, return to the ship for a “Bavarian Evening” on board.

Next day brings a walking tour of Passau with its picturesque laneways and squares. Visit St. Stephan’s Cathedral where the world’s largest pipe organ is located. Later head to Linz in Austria which was very important during the reign of the Hapsburgs. Take a stroll around the old medieval centre after which enjoy a piece of Linzertorte (cake) at a café,

(Today also offers an optional tour to Salzburg or Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic).

The next port of call is Melk, Austria, famous for its Benedictine Abbey where you will be able to have a wine tasting. Also visit Duernstein, a village known for its wine productivity. The village is charming amid spectacular local scenery. Here have a glass of wine at a local restaurant.

(Today also offers an optional Vienna by Night tour).

The following day, arrive in Austria’s capital, Vienna. Tour this wonderful Imperial city and marvel at the ornately grand architecture and attractive old buildings. See the impressive Vienna State Opera House, the famous Ringstrasse, the Hofburg Imperial Palace, and the Hundertwasser House, a strange and eccentric but fascinating building designed by the unusual architect, Friedrich Hundertwasser.  Also visit the impressive and magnificent St. Stephan’s Cathedral. (Optional tours today are to Schonbrunn Castle or “Sound of Vienna).

Arrive at Bratislava, capital of the Slovakia Republic. Enjoy a tour of the city including the Castle of Bratislava perched high on top of a hill with great views. (Optional tour today is to the Imperial Festival Palace in Austria owed at one time by the Empress Maria Theresa).

The last stop is at Budapest, Hungary, one of Europe’s most beautiful cities consisting of the old and hilly Buda and the more modern and flat Pest separated by the Danube. Highlights on a tour of the city will be Hero’s Square which took 30 years to build, Castle Hill with views of the magnificent Chain Bridge and Fisherman’s Bastion with its panoramic terrace offering amazing views of the city. (Optional tour today is to Esztergorm, the former residence of Hungarian Kings). This evening, enjoy a cruise on the river together with folklorique music.

Day 1

Depart Passau

Embarkation will take place in the late afternoon in Passau (at 4:00pm) and the crew will be on hand to help. Please ensure you check in at least 1 hour before the cruise departure time. After you've gained your first impressions of the Amadeus vessel, the cruise manager will invite you to enjoy a welcome cocktail in the panorama bar before the cruise director pampers you with a carefully created welcome dinner in the elegant on-board restaurant. The vessel will set sail in the early evening and travel upstream towards Regensburg.

Extending the traditional 110-m length of the Amadeus ships to 135-m creates not only space for more cabins but allows for quite a number of innovative new features in the premium market segment to come to fruition. The Amadeus Silver has a total of 78 enlarged standard cabins. Those on the Mozart and Strauss decks have an innovative form of French balcony offering the option of making the panoramic window front (which extends across the whole cabin width) automatically drop-down so that the cabin becomes a balcony in itself. The 12 Balcony Suites, moreover, have 'walk-out' exterior balconies with their own seating groups, enormous panoramic windows and comfortable bathrooms with bath, separate WC and separate shower.

Day 2

Regensburg

After breakfast you sail to the picturesque town of Regensburg in Bavaria where you can enjoy an optional morning guided tour of the town taking in some of the town's main sights. The tour includes the town hall, St. Peter's Cathedral and Stone Bridge which has spanned the Danube since it was built in the 12th century. You then head back to the vessel for lunch. In the afternoon try the optional trip to the Benedictine Abbey of Weltenburg which is one of the oldest abbeys in Bavaria and has achieved international renown, especially for the dark beer which is still brewed there. After a tour of the abbey's sacred areas, you have the chance to sample the beer. In the evening you can enjoy a Bavarian evening on board the vessel which will introduce you to the local customs while your vessel departs from Regensburg and sets off for Passau.

Day 3

Passau and Linz

Your next destination is Passau where the Inn, Ilz and Danube rivers meet. Those who enjoy excursions have four different trips to choose from here. For example, there's a guided morning walk through Passau with a chance to learn lots of interesting facts about the lively history of this town and its baroque town centre. Alternatively, there are also two all-day trips available. The first takes you to the romantic Mozart city of Salzburg and on to the impressive lake landscapes of Salzkammergut. The second includes a visit to the Czech town of Cesky Krumlov, home to some architectural treasures. The town was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site over 20 years ago thanks to its impressive town centre. Following the trips a coach will take you on to Linz where your AMADEUS vessel is ready and waiting. Passengers who opt to stay on board during the afternoon can also enjoy a tour of Linz in Upper Austria before the vessel departs for Wachau in the evening.

Day 4

Melk and Vienna

In the morning you arrive in Melk/Emmersdorf which is located at the heart of the world-famous cultural landscape of Wachau. You have the option of taking a trip to the Benedictine Abbey of Melk, the largest Baroque abbey in Austria, which is highly recommended. Here you can visit the modern abbey museum and take a tour of the prelature, marble hall and famous abbey library. The tour will then take you on by bus to the town of Weissenkirchen where your Amadus vessel awaits. At midday you will leave Wachau and you spend the afternoon on board before you arrive in the Austrian capital of Vienna in the evening. During optional the 'Vienna by Night' excursion, you can discover a new and exciting side to this metropolis on the Danube, and from the Kahlenberg hill, you can savour fascinating views of Vienna by night and the surrounding vineyards. Afterwards you can choose to take a trip to the oldest sparkling wine cellars in Austria, with a chance to sample some of the wines before continuing this exciting evening with a tour of Vienna by night.

Day 5

Vienna

You spend the day in Vienna and set off on a voyage of discovery through this charming city, formerly the imperial seat and residence of the Habsburgs. The best time to explore is after breakfast with the optional tour of the city along the Ringstrasse and into the historic centre of Vienna, where you can admire the famous sights such as St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Hundertwasserhaus, the Hofburg Palace and numerous other magnificent buildings. In the afternoon there's an optional trip to the majestic Schonbrunn Palace with its magical gardens. The site experienced its heyday under the rule of Empress Maria Theresia and today is one of the most beautiful buildings in Vienna. After dinner music enthusiasts can enjoy an optional 'Sound of Vienna' performance at Vienna's Kursalon. The 'Alt Wien' orchestra plays popular melodies from Vienna's classic era and provides a varied evening of lively waltz music and famous concert melodies. The vessel will leave Vienna in the early hours of the morning, continuing downstream to Bratislava.

Day 6

Bratislava

You arrive in the Slovakian capital of Bratislava during breakfast. In the morning you can choose to enjoy a city tour of Bratislava's most important sights, and a detour to the world-famous Bratislava Castle is a must. Here you can take in the fantastic views of three countries - Austria, Hungary and Slovakia. Then it's time to return to the vessel for lunch before yet another optional excursion to the imperial Schlosshof palace which once served as a country estate for Empress Maria Theresia. The guided tour will take you around the imperial apartments, chapel and magnificent festival hall and afterwards there's plenty of time for a stroll through the beautiful castle gardens. In the evening the captain will invite you to enjoy an exclusive gala dinner while the vessel sails on to Hungary.

Day 7

Esztergom and Budapest

Today you arrive in Esztergom in the early morning, where you have the option to take a trip to Szentendre, home to an artists' colony since 1926. The small town contains numerous contemporary galleries and museums which highlight the significance of Szentendre as the artistic stronghold of Hungary. A tour of the town will give you the chance to visit various museums and see Hungary's oldest sundial. At midday the coach will take you back to Budapest where your Amadeus vessel awaits. From the water you can enjoy fascinating views of the beautiful buildings on both sides of the Danube, which you can visit during an optional tour of the city in the afternoon. The program also features a visit to the world-famous parliament as well as a detour to the famous chain bridge, fisherman's bastion and St. Matthew's church on the imposing castle hill. During your last evening on board you can enjoy a lively Hungarian folklore show with traditional dancing followed by a romantic evening cruise through the illuminated city of Budapest.

Day 8

Budapest Departure

Before disembarkation in the morning you can enjoy a generous breakfast, then you set off on your onward journey. The Amadeus crew would like to thank you for your stay and wish you a good trip home.
