Classic Italy & Cruise the Greek Islands

Duration
15 Days
Prices From:
US$ 5,259

Explore historical treasures and windswept islands on this journey across Italy and Greece. Starting in Italy, you’ll explore the masterworks of Rome, Florence, and Venice before cruising the Greek islands and visiting the medieval walled city of Dubrovnik.

This 15-day Italy vacation takes you to the most popular Italian cities before cruising the Greek Islands.

Your Italy vacation begins in Rome, the nation’s capital and the heart of the ancient Roman Empire. It's impossible to be anything but floored by all that Rome has to offer. A morning tour will introduce you to a few of the city's highlights, starting at the Spanish Steps where John Keats spent the last months of his life, to the Trevi Fountain, where a coin thrown into the fountain over your shoulder will assure your return to Rome in the future, to the Pantheon, one of the world's great ancient buildings, and ending at Bernini's Four Rivers Fountain. While in Rome, be sure to delve into the city's ancient past at the Colosseum and the Roman Forum and see some of the world's great artistic treasures at the Vatican City with St. Peter's Basilica and the majesty of the Sistine Chapel. You’ll also learn how to make authentic pizza with a cooking class at That’s Amore Restaurant.

Continue your Italy vacation to Florence, Italy’s treasure trove of art. Florence has long been the country’s artistic capital. You’ll take a walking tour through the heart of Florence to see the religious monuments and buildings that define the city. Start at Loggia del Bigallo and head through the city to see Brunelleschi’s Dome, the Baptistery of San Giovanni, and Piazza Signoria, which is one of the most beautiful squares in the entire world and essentially the city’s outdoor museum. After your walking tour, be sure to head to the Uffizi Gallery to see some artistic masterpieces such as Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” and the Academy Gallery to see the worlds’ most famous statue, Michelangelo’s “David.” Spend the rest of your time in the city taking advantage of the bright flavours of Tuscan cuisine and discovering masterworks around every corner.

Pass on to Venice, the city of canals that used to be one of the world capitals of commerce and culture. Head into the heart of the city to see St. Mark's Square and Basilica and cross Rialto Bridge for the best views of the iconic Grand Canal. While in Venice, you’ll also enjoy a private gondola ride along the canals, including a trip down the Grand Canal. After exploring the narrow streets and bustling piazzas, board the Norwegian Star, a state-of-the-art cruise ship that has 15 restaurants, 11 bars and lounges, and a spa and on-board casino to keep you occupied as you cruise the Adriatic Sea.

The first stop on your Greek Islands cruise is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kotor in Montenegro. This labyrinthine medieval city has high city walls and the Cathedral of St. Tryphon, which dates back to the 8th century. Continue into Greek waters to visit Corfu, where Odysseus was shipwrecked following the Trojan War. Escape the crowds by walking along the breathtaking beaches and swimming in the deep blue waters.

Pass along to Santorini, the magical island home to whitewashed houses, windswept cliffs, and picture-perfect bliss. You can stroll along the 300m-high cliffs towering over the ocean or enjoy the romantic atmosphere of the island’s charming towns. The island is also home to the Minoan ruins of Akrotiri, one of the country’s best archaeological sites. Continue to Mykonos, the thumping heartbeat of the Cylades. The island is second-to-none when it comes to nightlife, but it’s also full of high-end restaurants and stunning views that’ll satisfy even more sedate travellers.

The final stop on your cruise along the Adriatic is Dubrovnik, one of the world’s best-preserved medieval cities. While Dubrovnik is likely most famous for its role as King's Landing on Game of Thrones, it has a long pedigree of gorgeous architecture and sunny weather. Walk along the 500-year-old city walls that encircle the town before deep-diving into the lively café culture that makes Dubrovnik so charming. Then return to Venice to close out your tour of Greece and Italy.

From here begins your discovery of the amazing complex of monuments that characterize the religious centre of Florence: the Cathedral with its incredible Brunelleschi dome, the Baptistery of San Giovanni with the Porta del Paradiso and the elegant Giotto bell tower, the loveliest in all of Italy. The walk continues along lively Via Calzaioli in the heart of the city, where you can admire the imposing and singular Orsanmichele Church, a masterpiece of Florentine gothic art, decorated with shrines with statues of the patron saints of the powerful medieval trade guilds. Finally we arrive in Piazza Signoria, one of the most beautiful squares in the world and the political centre of the city.
