Discover the magnificent city of Lisbon. The history and traditions of the city will be unveiled to you as you discover the various sights. First stop is the Monument to the Discoveries. This monument was built in honor of Henry the Navigator, who was instrumental in the success of the Portuguese explorations during the fifteenth century, a period now known as the Age of Discoveries. Next is the Tower of Belem, which was built in 1515 as a fortress to guard the entrance to Lisbon's harbor. The Belem Tower was the starting point for many of the voyages of discovery, and for the sailors it was the last sight of their homeland. You will then continue on and see Jeronimos' Monastery, which is one of the great triumphs of European Gothic (UNESCO has classified it a World Heritage monument), with much of the design characterized by elaborate sculptural details and maritime motifs. Your tour would not be complete without a visit to the Coaches Museum. One of Lisbon's most visited sights, the Coaches Museum (Museu Nacional dos Coches) has the largest and most valuable collection of its type in the world. It is housed in a richly decorated 18th century royal riding school that is part of Belem Palace, illustrating the ostentation and staggering wealth of the old Portuguese elite. To have a full Lisbon experience, you will also be treated to a Port Wine tasting.
