Classic Rhine Cruise: Amsterdam to Basel

A leisurely way to explore Germany and Holland cruising along the scenic Rhine River. From colourful Amsterdam, visit the fishing village of Volendam, the cathedral city of Cologne, romantic Koblenz, picturesque Rudesheim, charming Heidelberg, and historic Strasbourg in France before arriving in Basel.

Board your Rhine River cruise in Amsterdam. Begin with a tour to the old fishing village of Volendam where some of its residents still wear traditional Dutch costumes. Continue to a cheese farm and learn how to make Dutch cheese after which return to Amsterdam with time to explore this beautiful city and its attractive canals. 

Set sail up the Rhine and arrive at Cologne where you will enjoy a walking tour.  Discover the old parts of the city with their characteristic cobble-stone streets and also visit the exceptional Cologne Cathedral, one of the most visited sites in Germany. 

Next day sail to Cochem which is actually on the Moselle River and known for its narrow winding streets and restored old houses. Then continue to the Imperial Reichsburg Castle which is located on a rocky promontory high above the town affording wonderful views of Cochem and the surrounding countryside.  Later enjoy sampling some Moselle wines.

Arrive the next morning in the picturesque town of Rudesheim. Start your day with a visit to the unique “Siegfried Mechanical Music Cabinet” for a musical adventure with historical self-playing musical instruments.  Afterwards, explore the town with its wine houses, garden taverns and quaint narrow laneways. (Optional tour today to Koblenz, one of the most beautiful and oldest towns in Germany).

The following day you arrive at Heidelberg, the splendid and famous University City. During a tour here, you will visit the castle where from the Grand Terrace, you will have panoramic views of Heidelberg. (There is an optional tour today to the town of Speyer with its ancient Roman sites).

Your next port of call is Strasbourg in France, home to the European Parliament. Enjoy a walking tour including the historic lovely old part of the city. Also visit the famous Notre Dame Cathedral. Afterwards continue to “Petite France” a medieval quarter with colourful covered bridged and half-timbered houses. 

On arrival at Basel, your cruise comes to an end.

The new vessel has been designed as a sister vessel to the award-winning Silver and Silver II, and will add another premium vessel to the fleet. In terms of design and realisation, the Amadeus Silver III is based on the already very successful model: the new vessel comprises: 12 large suites with a functional external balcony and cosy reading corner, 72 standard cabins with for the most part panoramic window front which can be lowered, luxurious bathrooms and walk-in wardrobe and spacious public areas such as the classical "Café Vienna" and the open air, glass protected "River Terrace" lounge.

Day 2

Amsterdam and Hoorn

Begin your exploration with a relaxing cruise through a myriad of landscapes along the Rhine river. For more active pursuits, spend the morning exploring the canal city of Amsterdam and the surrounding countryside, rejoing the vessel in the town of Hoorn.

This evening join your fellow travelers for dinner.

Day 3


After lunch, view our arrival into the beautiful city of Cologne. Every year visitors from all over the world are drawn to the historical city and its 2000-year history. Explore the historic Old Town, visit the famous twin-spired Cologne Cathedral, or perhaps sample some of the famous Kölsch beer brewed in Cologne. There are many medieval houses, bridges, and gates that will delight the historian in you, while the more modern skyscrapers that tower overhead are sure to impress. After an exciting day, you will return to the vessel and make your way south.

Day 4


Today the Amadeus vessel takes a special trip down the romantic Moselle river, the largest tributary of the Rhine, and anchors at the old town of Cochem. The scenery in the Moselle Valley has been dominated by vineyards for millennia. Cochem itself has narrow streets, twisting alleys and medieval town gates, churches and walls. Discover the beauty of Cochem and perhaps sample some of the Riesling wines produced in this region. This evening you will set off towards Koblenz.

Day 5

Koblenz and Rudesheim

This morning arrive in Koblenz, ideally situated at the confluence of the Rhine and the Moselle rivers. The Romans, the Franks, the Holy Roman Empire, the French, and the Germans have all had a hand in this strategic city's 2000 year history. St. Castor Basilica, the Church of our Beloved Lady, and the Emperor Kaiser Wilhelm's memorial at the German Corner, are just a few of the sites which reflect the history of the area.

This afternoon, spend time on deck as we cruise the most beautiful section of the river - the legendary Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Late this afternoon, the vessel arrives in Rudesheim, a winemaking town in the Rhine Gorge. Discover the region's rich history of winemaking - perhaps visit the local museum -a great place to start. Back onboard your crew awaits with a delicious dinner.

Day 6

Mannheim and Speyer

After breakfast, explore the bustling metropolis of Mannheim. This unique city has many sights to see including the University of Mannheim, the National Theater Mannheim, and St. Sebastian's Church. It is also home to Luisenpark, one of the most beautiful parks in all of Germany. Nearby Heidelberg is another old university city which is also a worthwhile visit. This afternoon's call is at Speyer, a city known for its Cathedral where eight Roman Emperors and German Kings are interred. The Old Town Gate, Memorial Church, and Transportation Museum are all highlights of this beautiful city. Tonight, enjoy the Captain's Gala Dinner after your exciting day.

Day 7


This morning you will arrive in the dynamic capital of Alsace. This beautiful city's sights include the famous cathedral Strassburger Münster and the Petite France quarter, a former mill and tanner district that still maintains its medieval charm. Half-timbered houses, the Ponts Couverts, the Palais de Rohan, the Council of Europe are among the wonders that Strasbourg holds in store for you. The Grand Island, the city center, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is connected to the rest of the city by 22 stone bridges. After lunch onboard, take in the sites of the romantic Rhine as we move towards Switzerland, your final destination.

In the morning you arrive in Basel, a metropolis between the 3 countries of Switzerland, Germany and France. After an exciting week, four countries and more than 900 of kilometres sailed, it's time to say goodbye to the crew and set off back home. Your cruise manager will be on hand to help you with disembarkation.
