What is a Classic Independent Itinerary? SEE Goway Classic BELOW

This 9-day trip through Southern Italy divides its time between Rome and Sorrento, taking in ancient ruins, a cookery class, and the Isle of Capri along the way.

Arrive in Rome and take a two hour morning tour to see the most famous sights. Start from the Spanish Steps, toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain, pay your respects to gods gone by at the Pantheon, and visit the Piazza Navona. Your afternoon is all about the Vatican and its splendid museums, housing over 65,000 works of art. You’ll also admire the Sistine Chapel and the Basilica of St Peter.

The following day, make your own work of art in the kitchen, learning to prepare some traditional Italian dishes specific to Rome and the Lazio region. Local wines will compliment your creations as you enjoy them. Your last full day in Rome includes a hop-on, hop-off bus pass, so you can pick up the remaining sights at your leisure. You’ll recognise some from your previous tour, but also have the opportunity to visit the Colosseum, Marcello’s Theatre, Circo Massimo, and others. The tour includes commentary in eight different languages.

On to Sorrento, where your seaside accommodation is ideally located for visiting the Isle of Capri. Life seems to slow down here, making it the perfect place to recover from the frenetic pace of Rome. Warm hospitality and an unchanged way of life are defining features of Capri. Discover them while exploring the villages and natural sights.

The name Pompeii has passed into legend. Synonymous with tragedy, it leaves behind a fascinating ruins site at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. Explore the houses, theatres and other structures of the doomed city before taking a guided tour of the culprit’s summit, which offers you sweeping views over the Bay of Naples. Pompeii wasn’t the only victim of Vesuvius’ temper. Also destroyed, though better preserved, is Herculaneum, the site of your last day trip. Protected under a layer of tuffaceous material, many aspects of daily life have been preserved in detail, including baths, a sports ground, swimming pools and more.

Return to Naples airport or train station for your departure.

Rome is rich with history and many of its hotels are grand and old-fashioned. The Hotel Capo D'Africa was once a school, built in the early 20th century, and its facade remains unpretentious, with only a pair of palm trees flanking the doorway to dress it up. The interior is a different story, modern though unpretentiously so, more decorated than designed, with a cheery but tasteful palette and modern yet functional furniture. Of special note is the rooftop terrace, and the quiet calm of this neighborhood, just a few blocks to the east of the Colosseum. No location in this sprawling city is truly central, which means that this spot is as convenient as any other, with the added benefit that it is not overrun by throngs of tourists.

Fountains, Squares, Vatican Museum and St. Peter's Basilica- Small Group

Enjoy a morning tour of Rome and see its most symbolic sights on a 2-hour journey to its fountains and squares. Departing from the Spanish Steps, dominated by the church of Trinita dei Monti, proceed to the Rococo splendor of the Trevi Fountain. Admire the fantasy creatures designed to embody movement. Your guide will explain how, according to tradition, if you throw a coin over your shoulder into the fountain you will eventually return to Rome. Toss in a penny and cross your fingers! Continue to the Pantheon (Temple of all The Gods), originally built to honor the 7 deities of Ancient Rome. Featuring the largest brick dome in the history of architecture, the Pantheon is considered a forerunner of all modern places of worship, and is the most copied of all classical buildings. Next stop is the Piazza Navona, built on the ruins of the Domitian Circus, and now adorned by Bernini's Fountain of the 4 Rivers. Today lunch is included at a typical Italian restaurant. Next it is time to skip the long lines at the Vatican Museum, St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. Your tour starts from the Vatican Museum, which houses the most important collection of ancient art in the world including about 1,400 rooms and over 65,000 works of art. Capri and Anacapri (ex. Sorrento)

Visit the magical Island and sample its beauty sights and scenery! Travel to the island of Capri and visit two towns of Capri and Anacapri. The tour begins with a visit to Anacapri, where you can have time to wander around the lovely town. This picture-perfect town seems untouched by modern times; residents enjoy a slow, simple pace of life and welcome tourists with open arms. It is a town that beckons visitors to slow down, relax and enjoy its subdued ambiance. The tour then continues to the centre of Capri, where the little square (otherwise knows as "the drawing room of the world" is located). You will have a chance to view the Faraglioni Rocks from Augustus' Garden followed by a walk along the artisan and designer shops. Capri's unique beauties were celebrated in ancient times and later published for the world in Homer's works: Odysseus (known in Latin as Ulysses) sailing past the island, narrowly escaped the fate of those who hear the voices of the Sirens.

Day 7

Pompeii and Vesuvius

Today you will combine a visit to Pompeii with a climb to the summit of the Volcano! This guided tour begins with a visit to the excavations at Pompeii. Walking through the ancient streets you can visit the houses, theatre and many other buildings present in the ancient town. This area was once the residence of Roman patricians before the tremendous eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD. After lunch (own account), you will continue the afternoon by visiting Mount Vesuvius, where you will enjoy a guided tour to the crater. From here there are wonderful views of the gulf of Naples.

Duration7 Hours
Day 8

Herculaneum

This morning you will rediscover Roman Civilisation at one of the best preserved sights in the area. Herculaneum, ancient city of 4000-5000 inhabitants in Campania, Italy. The city was destroyed - together with Pompeii, Torre Annunziata, and Stabiae - by the Vesuvius eruption of ad 79. The particular circumstances of the burial of Herculaneum, unlike those of Pompeii, led to the formation over the city of a compact mass of tufaceous material about 50 to 60 feet (15 to 18 metres) deep. Although this layer made excavation very difficult, it preserved Herculaneum and prevented tampering and looting. Thus, Herculaneum offers a detailed impression of private life that is only with difficulty achieved in other centres of the ancient world. The public monuments uncovered include the palaestra (sports ground), with a large portico surrounding a vast central piscina (swimming pool), and thermae (baths), one of which adjoins the former beachfront. This bath is in a remarkable state of preservation, having remained largely protected against the pyroclastic flows of the eruption. Excavation continues, since the demolition of part of Ercolano, at the forum of the ancient city and at the ancient coastline.
