Memories of D-Day: Paris to Paris

Duration
9 Days
Prices From:
US$ 4,399

On this small-group tour, you will explore one of the largest military operations in history. Stay in first-class accommodations and discover Paris and the battlefields of Normandy. Travel back in time to commemorate the D-Day Landings, stroll along historic beaches, and visit museums, memorials, and cemeteries.

This 9-day France vacation takes you to Paris and across the battlefields of Normandy to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of D-Day.

Your French vacation begins in Paris, the City of Lights and the most popular city on the planet. You’ll have a day to get acquainted with the city before heading north to Normandy to begin your exploration of World War II (don’t worry: you’ll have time in Paris before your trip is done). You’ll spend the next two days exploring the Allied landing sites of D-Day, walking along beaches that were home to unspeakable violence, and visiting memorials to fallen soldiers to pay your respects for their sacrifices. Pass through the villages of Giverny and stop off at the former home of Impressionist painter, Claude Monet, before reaching Trouville, the Queen of the Beaches. The next morning, begin at Longues-sur-Mer where you'll see the German Gun Battery that’ll give you an image of German defenses during D-Day. Continue to the Juno Beach Centre where you’ll learn about Canadian contributions to the battle and explore the museum. Head on to a viewpoint over Sword Beach and Ranville, the first village liberated after the landing, before reaching Pegasus Bridge and the Airborne Forces Memorial Museum.

After exploring the beaches of Normandy, pass on to Bayeux to see the Bayeux Tapestry, a medieval treasure depicting William the Conqueror’s invasion of England. You’ll learn more about William’s life and conquests at Caen Castle, which was built by William prior to his invasion of England. It remains one of the largest fortresses in all of Europe. Turn southeast towards Paris and pass through quaint villages and admire stunning coastal scenery along the way. You’ll also stop off at Mont Saint Michel, a medieval abbey that becomes a solitary island at high tide. It’s truly one of France’s most breathtaking sites. After exploring the abbey and walking through the cobblestoned streets of Saint-Malo, return to Paris to experience all that the City of Lights has to offer.

Paris has beguiled travellers for centuries. Culturally, Paris has few, if any, rivals the world over. The architecture, food, art, history, and atmosphere is second-to-none. On your first full-day in Paris, you’ll experience artistic highlights with a visit to the Musee d’Orsay, where you’ll gaze upon Impressionist masterpieces by Monet, Van Gogh, and Cezanne. That afternoon, head just outside of Paris to the Palace of Versailles, the opulent chateau of the Sun King, Louis XIV. Tour the halls and drawing rooms of this magnificent palace, including the famous Hall of Mirrors, to experience the high of French decadence. The next day, embark on a city sightseeing tour to explore Paris’s most famous landmarks, from the magnificent Arc de Triomphe to the Opera House to Notre Dame Cathedral and the bustling lanes of the Latin Quarter. Your final day in Paris is at leisure to explore the city on your own. Get lost in the artsy streets of Montmartre, while away the hours in a smart bistro with a glass of Beaujolais, or take a nighttime river cruise to see the city lit up in all its glory.

At the end of your stay in Paris, head to the airport to continue your onward journey.

Its collections represent all expressive forms, from painting to architecture, as well as sculpture, the decorative arts and photography. At the end of 2011, the museum reopened all of its entirely renovated spaces as well as some new rooms: an additional 400 m² for the Pavillon Amont, Post-Impressionist artists at the heart of the museum, the redesign of the Impressionists gallery, a new temporary exhibition space, plus a new 'aquatic' decor for the Café des Hauteurs, designed by Brazilian designers, the Campana Brothers. The château has undergone relatively few alterations since its construction, though almost all the interior furnishings disappeared during the Revolution and many of the rooms were rebuilt by Louis-Philippe (1830-48) .
