Denmark Self-Drive: Copenhagen, Roskilde, Odense & Arhus

Duration
8 Days
Prices From:
US$ 1,979

MODERATE | SELF-DRIVE: Denmark is a land of fairy tales, boasting colourful harbours, charming timber houses and impressive royal palaces. Visit the royal palace in Copenhagen, celebrate the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen in Odense and get your fill of museums in Arhus.

This 8-day self-drive tour is perfect for independent travelers who like the flexibility to decide their own pace and itinerary when exploring the world. Whether you prefer a self-drive car with pre-booked accommodation or a rental car, Goway has you covered. Denmark is a perfect country to explore at your own pace. If this tour peaks your interest, we also offer self-drive tours in other parts of the world.

Begin in Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen, often called the happiest city in the world. After spending a few hours in town, you’ll see why. The laidback vibe and compact urban centre make it a comfortable city to explore. Stroll around the eighteenth century historical centre of Frederiksstaden and see the home of the royal family, Amalienborg Palace. Copenhagen is famous for its style so be sure to hit up the city’s trendy bars or boutique shops to satisfy your inner hipster. If you’re traveling with kids Tivoli Gardens theme park is a perfect diversion between all the historical sites.

West of Copenhagen lies Roskilde. Most famous for its museums, Roskilde also boasts the largest European musical festival outside of Glastonbury. At the Land of Legends open-air museum you can see recreations of life during the Stone Age and the Viking period. If the Land of Legends doesn’t satisfy your hunger for Vikings, visit the Viking Ship Museum to see vessels from the eleventh century. Photograph the twin spires of the Gothic Roskilde Cathedral and go inside to see the tombs of former kings and queens.

Odense is the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen. The entire city acts as a monument to this beloved fairy tale writer. Visit museums and exhibitions celebrating Andersen or see animals at one of Europe’s best zoos. Odense is in the midst of renovation to accommodate a light rail train, so the centre has become pedestrian or cycle-only for the moment.

Arhus is Europe’s Capital of Culture for 2017. As the second largest city in Denmark, Arhus often plays second fiddle to Copenhagen, but it’s a city on the cusp of fame. See the restored frescoes of Arhus Cathedral or visit the open-air museum, Den Gamle By. If you’re tired of museums, the many bars and cafes will revitalize you.

This self-drive tour of Denmark offers a charming experience of one of the most celebrated urban cultures in the world.
