Essence of Austria: Munich to Vienna

Duration
10 Days
Prices From:
US$ 3,273

Fall head over heels for Austria’s deep valleys and sparkling blue lakes on this leisurely journey through the country. Venture to enchanting alpine villages, charming baroque cities, and fascinating castles. If the breathtaking scenery doesn’t capture your heart, the delicious cuisine certainly will.

This 10-day Austrian vacation takes you from Munich to the most popular sights of Austria, including Salzburg, Durnstein, and Vienna.

Your trip to Austria begins across the border in Munich, the capital of Bavaria and Germany’s third-largest city. Although the city has a population of 1.3 million, Munich has a small-town atmosphere and is very walkable. Embark on the Grand Circle of the city to see its most famous sites, from the Neues Rathaus or New Town Hall, with its massive 90m façade, to the boutique stores of Maximilianstrasse, to the Alte Pinakothek, one of the most respected art galleries in all of Europe. You can also stop by Olympic Tower and the Deutsches Museum, which is the world’s oldest and largest science museum. From Munich, head to Tegernsee, a picturesque lakeside town in the Bavarian Alps. Learn about the lake’s fishing industry before crossing the border into Austria and your first stop, the lake town of Zell am See.

In Zell am See, you’ll take a cooking class to learn how to make kaspressknodel (cheese dumplings) before crossing back over the border to Berchtesgaden, where you’ll visit the Eagle’s Nest, Hitler’s private fortress perched atop a high mountain. After learning about World War II and the Nazi command, head back down the mountain and pass into Austria’s most popular town, Salzburg. The fairy tale town of Salzburg is the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the most beautiful sight in the country. During your time here, you’ll visit Mirabell Palace and Gardens, admire Salzburg Cathedral, and attend a concert of some of Mozart’s most famous music at the imposing Salzburg Fortress.

In Salzburg, board a cogwheel strain and venture to Schafbergbahn at the top of Schanfberg Mountain. Admire spectacular views of the Salzkammergut region before continuing to Schnitzhof Alm, a 400-year-old cottage that’s famous for its traditional cheeses. After a cheese tasting, you’ll continue to other sites in Austria, including Tauplitz, Admont Abbey, and Armstetten, where you’ll visit a cider distillery.

Continue your exploration of Austria’s national drinks by heading to Durnstein, a picturesque city known for its many vineyards. Enjoy a wine tasting in Feuersbrunn and dine on lunch amidst the picturesque parks and gardens of Tullin an der Donau before reaching Vienna, your final stop on your Austrian vacation. Vienna is the nation’s capital and the newly-crowned Most Livable City in the World. In the past, it was the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and home of the Habsburg Dynasty. As such, it’s a city of many historical wonders. Take some time to see its greatest landmarks of the past, from the State Opera House to the Parliament Building, the winter palace of the Hofburg, and Schonbrunn Palace, home to Maria Theresia and other Habsburg royals during the empire’s heights. At the end of your stay, head to the airport to continue your onward journey.
