Explore Southern Portugal Self Drive

Duration
8 Days
Prices From:
US$ 1,156

FIRST-CLASS | SELF-DRIVE: On this 8-day program, discover Portugal and the Algarve. Set your own pace and visit medieval cities, romantic palaces, UNESCO World Heritage sites, picturesque fishing villages, golden beaches and limestone cliffs. Stay in first class accommodations, including a 7-day car rental with insurance.

This 8-day Portugal self-drive explores central and southern Portugal including the marvelous Algarve. Visit literary cities, monasteries, seaside towns and the magnificent palaces of Sintra.

Set out from Lisbon and head west toward Cascais, where you'll spend three nights just outside of town on what many call the Portuguese riviera. Set out early the following day to see the awesome palaces of the Sintra region. You might explore the mysteries of Quinta da Reguleira, or the candy-coloured Pena Palace. If you have time, visit the Belem district, just west of Lisbon, where you can see the famous Belem Tower and Jeronimos Monastery.

Your journey then takes you north to Obidos, a picture perfect walled city that preserves the Portugal of another time. Wander its many handicraft shops and bookstores, making sure to sample the local ginja cherry liqueur. Then drive on to the magnificent monasteries of Alcobaca--home to Portugal's saddest (or most macabre) love story, and Batalha. If you have time, call in at the seaside town of Nazare, home to some of the world's largest waves.

Time to turn inland bound for Evora, the capital of the Alentejo region and chance to try Portugal's culinary delights away from the sea. Don't miss exploring its ancient stone walls, Roman temple devoted to Diana--one of the best preserved in Portugal--or the creepy chapel of bones. Then climb to the top of the city's cathedral for a sweeping rooftop view before your drive to Alagoa, your home in the Algarve for the next three nights.

The Algarve is one of the most beautiful seaside regions in all of Europe, not just Portugal. You'll want two days to drive and discover here, beginning with the west, surrounding the popular town of Lagos. See the Moorish palace of Silves, and the garden-like landscape of Monchique. The following day, devote your time to the east, home to Faro, the Algarve's capital, and Tavra, home to well preserved Roman ruins.

On your way back to Lisbon, call in at the pretty seaside town of Sesimbra and explore its Moorish castle. Nature lovers might prefer to explore Arrabida Natural Park. Spending your last night in Lisbon, perhaps explore the Barrio Alto or the medieval neighbourhood of Alfama. You might even take in a fado performance, enjoying Portugal's signature musical artform.

Of course, there's lots more to enjoy in Lisbon if you care to extend your stay.
