Fabulous Scandinavia and Helsinki

Duration
12 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,528

Starting in Copenhagen, Denmark's delightful capital, enjoy a fully escorted coach journey through Norway's exhilarating fjord country. Take the cable car to appreciate Bergen from above or look down in awe at the breathtaking gorge in Stalheim. Your journey offers magnificent natural scenery at every turn, but the captivating capital cities of Oslo, Stockholm and Helsinki also wait to be explored.

This 12-day, first-class shared tour through Scandinavia invites you to discover some of the world's most liveable cities, along with the gorgeous scenery of Norway.

Begin in Copenhagen, where you may wish to arrive early to ensure enough time to enjoy all the world’s ‘happiest capital city’ has to offer. Explore its palaces, visit the world’s oldest operating amusement park, Tivoli, or lose yourself in the city’s innovative art and design museums. A coach sightseeing tour takes you around any sights you missed before catching your overnight ferry to Oslo. After breakfast, set out to the forests and lakes of Norway including the Hallingdal Valley, and one of the country’s first Alpine resorts.

The following day takes you across one of the world’s longest suspension bridges through mountain scenery to Bergen, the gateway to the fjords that is a lovely city break in its own right. Explore some of the nearby valleys and fjords before dinner in town. After a night in Bergen, go on to the Naeroy Valley and Naeroyfjord, and have the option to ride the famous Flam Railway. Overnight in Fagernes before returning to Oslo, where a city tour takes you to the Opera House, Royal Palace, Vigeland Park, known for its eye-popping sculptures, and more.

Travel through the forest and lake dotted landscape of east Norway and Sweden and learn about the complex and fascinating culture of the now largely assimilated ‘Forest Finns.’ Arriving in Stockholm in the late afternoon, you’ll have a night to refresh before taking a sightseeing tour that shows you the best of the city’s archipelago, including its old town, Gamla Stan. You’ll have the rest of your day at leisure, with time to perhaps visit the island of Djurgarden, home to Skansen, Stockholm’s ‘Sweden in miniature’ outdoor museum, the world famous Vasa Museum, the Nordic Museum, and Pop House, which houses the long awaited ABBA The Museum.

There’s lots to see in Stockholm, so enjoy another morning at leisure, perhaps exploring the Royal Palace or Fotografiska, the city’s innovative photography museum, before your coach takes you to board the overnight ferry to Helsinki. Arrive in the morning, in time for a two hour sightseeing tour that takes you to Senate Square, Finlandia Hall, and Temppeliaukio Church, which is carved into solid rock. With the afternoon at leisure, you might opt to get a Finland 101 at Seurasaaren Ulkomuseo or Kansallismuseo, lose yourself in the city’s vast cultural museums, shop up a storm in the design district, or explore maritime history at the waterfront.

Stalheim - Flam - Fagernes

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel and, perhaps, a last wistful glance over the gorge. You won't have to wait long to see new amazing vistas when the coach continues its drive down the Naeroy valley to Gudvangen. Here, you board a ferry taking you along the Naeroyfjord, the most beautiful and wildest arm of the famous Sognefjord, which rightfully takes its place on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The Naeroyfjord is 17km long and at its narrowest point only about 820 feet wide. It is considered one of the most dramatic fjord trips in Europe. The steep coastal cliffs, waterfalls and idyllic farms, seemingly clinging to the mountainside, make this an incredibly unique journey.

When you disembark at the delightful village of Flam, you can choose to join the optional ride on the famous, panoramic Flamsbana, check out the Stegastein Viewpoint or spend time exploring Flam on your own.

Day 8

Oslo - Stockholm

Be prepared for a long day of travel today, leaving Oslo after an early breakfast. It carries you through Norway into Sweden through a forested landscape dotted with thousands of lakes. An interesting point of your journey appears in the area of Varmland, which hugs the border with Norway to the east of Oslo. This large contiguous forest belt was once home to the "Forest Finns", a culture that no longer exists. Interestingly, a lot of local people today feel a strong connection to it because the Forest Finns' understanding of nature was rooted in an eastern shamanistic tradition, often associated with magic and mystery. The white moose of Varmland, a piece of recent magic, is now famous worldwide since video footage of its appearance went viral during 2017.

Arrival in Stockholm is late in the afternoon and, after checking into your hotel, the rest of your evening is at leisure.

Day 9

Stockholm

After breakfast, a 3-hour sightseeing tour reveals that much of Stockholm is situated on the water, stretching across fourteen islands, connected by 57 bridges and continuing along the banks to the archipelago where Lake Malaren flows into the Baltic Sea. Not surprisingly, the locals call it 'Beauty on Water'. The city also embraces the unique character of an old 13th century town with modern high-tech architecture.

Your tour travels past highlights such as the historically significant City Hall, best known as the place where the Nobel Prize festivities are being held and Gamla Stan, the Old Town, will surprise you with its medieval atmosphere.

The drive to Fjallgatan on Sodermalm is a great finale to your tour, offering some incredible views over the Old Town, the museum island of Skeppsholmen, and the island of Djurgarden, the most visited tourist destination in Stockholm. The locals affectionately think of it as their balcony.

The tour ends at the hotel and the rest of your day is at leisure.
