FIRST-CLASS | SELF-DRIVE: Explore the remote Faroe Islands on this self-drive Denmark tour. Travelling from island to island, you’ll explore windswept moorlands, see puffin colonies on towering cliff sides, and seemingly travel back in time as you visit Viking settlements and 1000-year-old churches.

This 13-day Denmark self-drive takes you through the Faroe Islands, a remote island group to the north of the United Kingdom. This self-drive tour is perfect for independent travellers who like the flexibility to decide their own pace and itinerary when exploring the world. Whether you prefer a self-drive car with pre-booked accommodation or a rental car, Goway has you covered. Denmark is a perfect country to explore at your own pace. If this tour peaks your interest, we also offer self-drive tours in other parts of the world.

The Faroe Islands are a Danish self-governing archipelago located in the North Atlantic Ocean above the United Kingdom. These 18 remote islands are some of the best-kept secrets in Europe. The windswept and treeless moorlands are perfect for hiking, while the mountainous cliffs offer incredible views of the ocean and the surrounding islands. If you love nature and mythical culture, you’ll love a trip to the Faroe Islands.

Begin your Danish self-drive on the westernmost island of Mykines, which is known for the incredible number of birds that live along the steep cliffs. During your day here, hike through the mountains to the only gannet colony in the Faroe Islands and spot puffins living on the steep cliffs that sit hundreds of metres above sea level. Continue your self-drive, passing through a subsea tunnel that is 105m below sea level at its deepest point. When you reach Vestmanna on Streymoy, you’ll have the chance to head on a boat tour to see the most popular attraction in the islands, the bird colonies pitched along the cliffs. Afterwards, cross the Atlantic Bridge to Eysturoy, where you’ll enjoy wonderful views at Eidi and Gjogy and see the rock formations known as the “Giant and the Old Hag.”

The next day, you have the option of exploring the area around Tjornuvik, where the Vikings settled when they first landed in the Faroe Islands. You should also take the time to stop in Saksun, a village surrounded by steep mountains and a lagoon-like lake. Continue on to Klaksvik, passing through another subsea tunnel and seeing the incredible light installations of Trondur Patursson. Once in the Northern Islands, you’ll explore Vidareidi, the northernmost village in the islands. Also be sure to head to Enniberg Promontory, where you’ll have great views over the surrounding islands.

Leave the Northern Islands and take the ferry to the southernmost island, Suduroy. Known for its deep-green mountains and colourful villages, the island is great for birders and nature lovers. Head down to Akraberg to visit the southernmost point in the islands. Then take a hiking tour through Hvannhagi and gaze out across the waters at the islands, Litla Dimun and Stora Dimun. Bid farewell to Suduroy and take two ferries to end up on Sandoy, an island steeped in myth. Sandoy is known for its isolated homes and supernatural traditions. As you explore the island, you might undercover a legend or two and witness the mystical powers of the island for yourself. Pass on to Skuvoy, where the Viking Chieftain Sigmunder Brestisson built the first church on the islands. If you head along the island’s west coast, you may be able to see bird hunters snatch birds and eggs from the cliff edge while suspended from long ropes from high above.

Continue your trip to the Faroe Islands by heading to the capital, Torshavn, which is one of the smallest capitals in the world and home to the oldest parliament in the world. While in town, be sure to explore the old town, Reyni, visit Fort Skansin, and admire Faroese crafts and handiwork at the design shops near the harbour, Vagsbotn. Pass south to Kirkjubour to experience the cultural centre of the islands and visit 900-year-old Roykstovan, where the yeoman to the King of Denmark still lives to this day. You’ll also see Olav’s Church, which dates back to 1,111AD and is the oldest remaining church in the islands. Close out your Denmark tour to the Faroe Islands with a full-day tour of Nolsoy, located only 20 minutes across the water from Torshavn. You’ll feel like you’ve travelled decades back in time as you explore the island, which is home to a colony of storm petrels and the incredible lighthouse, which has the largest lighthouse lens in the world that reaches 3m in diameter and weighs over 4 tonnes.

This self-drive of the Faroe Islands is the ultimate way to explore these enchanting islands.
