Consider arriving a day or two early, or book an extra few days at your trip’s end to enjoy all it has to offer.

Just to Berlin’s south, Dresden is widely praised as one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. Visit the Dresden Opera House, Imperial Zwinger palace, and more, spending two nights in the city to enjoy it at your own pace. Your second day takes you to ‘Saxon Switzerland’, a region packed with unique sights including an unusual Chinese-style palace, and superb views over the Elbe and surrounding area.

Set out for Weimar, stopping in at the baroque Moritzburg Castle along the way. You’ll also visit Meissen, the first town in Europe to manufacture porcelain. Arrive in Weimar, the birthplace of some of Germany’s most influential thinkers and artists including Goethe, Bach, and Liszt. You’ll spend two nights here, taking a day trip to Eisenach and Wartburg Castle, along with Erfurt, known as ‘Thuringian Rome’ because of its exquisite architecture.
