Fascinating Germany Escorted: Frankfurt to Frankfurt

Duration
13 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,419

This comprehensive Germany tour takes in many of the country’s most popular cities, from Frankfurt to colourful Munich, including Europe’s current ‘it’ city, Berlin, and the romantic Black Forest region.

This 13-day escorted Germany trip, staying in 3 and 4 star accomodations, lets you experience the country’s most iconic cities on an itinerary packed with great sights.

Frankfurt may be more famous for its airport and banks than its sights, but those who arrive early will still enjoy wandering the Romerplatz, or strolling the banks of the Main. Then travel to the famous winemaking town of Rudesheim and enjoy a tour of the historic centre before boarding a short Rhine cruise to St Goar. This is your gateway to Cologne, where Germany’s most impressive Dom (cathedral) looms over the Rhine, rewarding visitors lured by its Gothic twin spires.

Hamburg is one of the world’s most (in?)famous ports, and the second largest in Europe. With your time at leisure, consider a port cruise or a short walk through the picturesque old warehouses and canals of the Hafencity. After dark, perhaps explore Hamburg’s rowdier side in St Pauli, where the Beatles honed their craft. Some of the clubs where the Fab Four played remain open to this day.

With great respect to London and Paris, Berlin is where it’s all happening in today’s Europe, luring young creative minds and hearts from all over the world. Staying right near the former meeting point between east and west, get a bird’s eye view from the TV Tower, then stroll the splendid boulevard of Unter den Linden, which leads to the famous Brandenburg Gate and the glass-domed Reichstag. Berlin is a huge, decentralised city with many different neighbourhoods to explore (and excellent public transit), so spend your afternoon at leisure before visiting Sanssouci palace and park at Potsdam.

Get to the heart of Germany with an overnight stay and sightseeing tour in Erfurt, one of the country’s most architecturally beautiful cities. Then swing back by Frankfurt to pick up any sights you missed, before exploring Heidelberg and the Black Forest. Heidelberg is Germany’s great university town, and a popular destination in its own right. It’s also your gateway to one of the most famous forest regions in the world. The beautiful Black Forest is shrouded in myth, and offers plenty of walks to sights such as Ravenna Gorge. The following day, see how cuckoo clocks are made, and enjoy a Black Forest cheese tasting.

Time to explore the castles and beer halls of Bavaria. Germany’s most iconic region is also its most unique, bearing little resemblance to the rest of the country it’s come to represent in popular imagination. But the sights are spectacular, including Neuschwanstein Castle, home to mad King Ludwig II. You’ll also stop in at Wieskirche Church and Linderhof Castle. Sneak an extra country into your trip when you cross the border to visit Innsbruck. It’s perhaps Austria’s most famous and beautiful Alpine city, and a two time host city to the Winter Olympics. Innsbruck has been hailed as a medieval wonder, the ultimate ski resort town, a university hub, and more, so there’s a side of it to satisfy any travel interest. Look closely for Roman influences in the architecture.

Arrive at your final destination, Munich. The country’s third largest city is the Germany of fairy tales and travel brochures, awash with medieval architecture, and atmospheric drinking dens (Non-beer drinkers needn’t worry. Germany does a fine range of wines as well.). Take a city tour around the main attractions including Marienplatz, the city square famous for its clock tower. Those visiting in September may be caught up in the fun and frivolity of Oktoberfest, but a visit to Munich is memorable at any time of year.

Return to Frankfurt for your departure, stopping in at Rothenburg for one last taste of medieval Germany at its most romantic. Be sure to treat your taste buds to a Schneeballen (snow ball) before you depart
