This 5-day Germany vacation follows in the footsteps of Martin Luther, heading to important sites from his life, including Wittenberg, Leipzig, Eisleben, and Erfurt.
Your trip to Germany begins in Berlin, the nation’s capital and the king of cool in Europe. Berlin has historical treasures to outmatch most cities, but it’s also one of the most vibrant capital cities on the planet. A city tour will showcase some of its most famous historical sites, including Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie, and Potsdam Square. After getting a taste of Berlin’s mixture of historical treasures and trendy nightlife, begin your journey through the life of Martin Luther by heading to Wittenberg, where he famously nailed the 95 Theses to the doors of Wittenberg Castle Church, starting the Protestant Reformation.
Wittenberg is a gorgeous university town on the Elbe River. It’s also full of monuments to the life of Martin Luther. Head to the Lutherhaus, his former home and monastery that has become a museum displaying his personal items. Then continue to Schlosskirche to see his tomb before visiting St. Mary’s Church, where Luther used to preach. Continue along the Elbe River and reach Torgau, where you’ll visit Hartenfels Palace and chapel, where Luther consecrated his first Reformation Church. Visit the grave of Luther’s wife, Katharina von Bora, before heading to Leipzig to tour the Thomaskirche, where composer J.S. Bach is buried, and St. Nicholas Church, which was central to the anti-Communist demonstrations in 1989.
Continue your German vacation in Eisleben, the hometown of Martin Luther. Visit the house where Luther was born and died as well as the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, where Luther was baptized. You’ll also see the Church of St. Andrews, where Luther gave his first sermon. Head on to Erfurt, the city where Luther became a monk and his monastic community, the Augustine Monastery. Spend some time sightseeing through the city centre, visiting the Cathedral of St. Mary, where Luther was ordained, and continue to your final destination, Eisenbach, where you’ll explore Wartburg Castle, where Luther translated the New Testament into German.
Once you reach Frankfurt, head to the airport or train station to continue your onward journey.

Berlin - Wittenberg
The trip begins with a city tour of Berlin. Visit attractions like the Brandenburg Gate, the Cathedral of Berlin, the German Parliament building and the lovely boulevards. Then you travel to the city of Wittenberg, where you'll visit the house of Martin Luther that has been transformed into the most important museum of the Reformation. Next, you'll visit Luther's tomb in the Schlosskirche church. You'll also stop by the St. Mary church.
Wittenberg - Torgau - Leipzig
The tour continues to Torgau, traveling through the landscape along the Elbe River. In Torgau, visit the Hartenfels Palace and its chapel, the first Reformation church consecrated by Luther. You'll also visit the grave of Katharina von Bora, Luther's wife. You'll pause in front of the building where the main ideas in the articles of Torgau were developed. In the afternoon, you'll arrive in Leipzig, the site of the famous debate between Johann Eck and Martin Luther. Sightseeing tour of Leipzig and visit to the Thomaskirche church. You'll also see the city hall and the St. Nikolai church, where the prayers for peace against the communist dictatorship began.
Leipzig - Eisleben - Erfurt
After breakfast you'll travel to Eisleben, "the city of Martin Luther" and UNESCO World Heritage Monument. In Eisleben you'll visit the house where Luther was born and where he died. Other attractions on your itinerary include the church of St. Peter and St. Paul, where he was baptized, as well as the church of St. Andrews, where he held his final sermon. In the afternoon you'll continue to Erfurt, where Luther became a monk. You'll also have the opportunity to visit the Augustine Monastery, Martin Luther's religious community.
Erfurt - Eisenach - Frankfurt
In the morning there is time for sightseeing in Erfurt. Attractions include the St. Mary church and Krämerbrücke bridge. The tour continues to Eisenach. Take a guided tour of the impressive Wartburg Castle, where Luther translated the New Testament into German. Visit the Latin school and Bach Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage Monument. The tour concludes in Frankfurt.
