AT YOUR SERVICE. This is a great idea for experiencing Germany where you can choose your preferred level of accommodation. Of course, it can be modified and/or extended. As experts in customizing itineraries to suit your personal interests, available time, and budget, we at Goway are at your service!

Your German vacation begins in Frankfurt, Germany’s financial and business capital and home to the European Central Bank. Most Globetrotters probably know Frankfurt for its international airport, which services over 60 million passengers a year, but this city on the Main River has plenty to recommend itself. A city tour will get you up to speed on its mixture of tradition and modernism. Stroll the Altstadt or Old City for a look at half-timbered houses and classical centres like the Romsberg and Paulskirche, the seat of the first democratic parliament in Germany in 1848. Tour the Old Opera House, which was destroyed during World War II but rebuilt in the eighties. Stroll down the pedestrian-only Fressgass to shop butchers, delicatessens, and cheese shops. Then switch gears and pass through the skyscraper district and down Goethestrasse, with its luxury shops offering everything from Louis Vuitton to Prada. After a long day of shopping and touring the old town, take a load off by hitting up the night scene. The large student population ensures the city knows how to unwind.

From Frankfurt, take the train to Berlin, the nation’s capital. Berlin used to conjure images of Prussian austerity and severity, but this city of 4.5 million is not stuck in the past, despite its wealth of history. It’s a vibrant capital that celebrates freedom and lifestyle and has become the coolest place in Europe. Berlin has something for every kind of Globetrotter travelling to Germany. Cultural travelers can take in operas and classical theatre, or sample the seemingly-endless lineups of musical acts that fill the city’s bars and clubs each night. Foodies can enjoy the best of German and international cuisine at the city’s celebrated restaurants, while revelers get their hearts pumping at the beer halls and nightclubs. And few cities in the world boast as much history as Berlin.

History buffs can choose a time period at random and be amazed at the wealth of sights to see. Take in one of the classic symbols of the German Empire at the Brandenburg Gate. Walk the ruins of the Berlin Wall past Checkpoint Charlie and remind yourself that this city was split in two for half a century. Soberly explore the Haus der Wannsee Konferenz, where the Nazis discussed their “Final Solution,” before paying respects to their victims at the Memorial for the Murdered Jews of Europe. Berlin abounds with history and you’ll want to return to it in the future to see all that it has to offer.

After Berlin, head down to the capital of Bavaria to finish your Germany tour. Munich is a very walkable city with a small-town atmosphere despite its size of 1.3 million people. Head to the medieval square of Marienplatz to get a taste for the city’s architectural heritage. The Neues Rathaus or New Town Hall is a gorgeous neo-Gothic building with a massive 90-metre façade and one of the largest motorized Glockenspiel in the world. Every day at 11am, noon, and 5pm, 32 life-sized figurines spring to life and put on a motorized performance in accompaniment to the chiming of the hour. If museums are more your beat, be sure to visit the Alte Pinakothek, a massive art gallery housing some of Europe’s best art from the fourteenth through eighteenth centuries, as well as the Deutsches Museum, which is the oldest and largest science museum in the world. Head outside Munich to see the castles of the Swan King of Bavaria, Ludwig II. You’ll think you’ve walked into a Disney fairy tale as you explore Neuschwanstein and Linderhof.

This sample of Germany’s three major cities offers a wealth of history, food, and culture. It’s perfect for any independent Globetrotter.
