Glimpse of Ireland: The South-West

Duration
5 Days
Prices From:
US$ 305

Discover the beauty and the heritage of Ireland with a self drive car allowing flexible stops en route at Kildare, Cashel, Killarney, the Ring of Kerry, the village of Adare and Limerick. This is the ideal tour when time is limited.

This self-drive tour begins in Dublin where you pick up your rental car. With an overnight here, you have time to explore the city with attractions such as O'Connell Street, the Guinness Storehouse, Trinity College and its Book of Kells, the Old Jameson Distillery and the many elegant Georgian Squares.

The next morning, drive west to the town of Kildare where you can see the Irish National Stud, a horse breeding farm and the Japanese Gardens, a living monument to the meeting of Eastern and Western cultures in a Western setting. Then continue to Cashel where you will discover the ruins of the Rock of Cashel, the traditional seat of the Kings of Munster dating back to the 12th and 13th Centuries. Cashel's rich history is reflected in its prehistoric paths to mediaeval monasteries and fortified town houses. Eventually arrive in Killarney for two nights’ accommodation.

Killarney is your gateway for a drive around the famous Ring of Kerry, a scenic drive around the Iveragh Peninsula. Its 180 kilometre/ 110 mile long, circular route takes in rugged and verdant coastal landscapes and rural seaside villages. Stop in the villages of Killorglin, Cashersiveen, Waterville and Sneem. You can visit the Kerry Bog Village Museum where you step back in time to the early 18th century to recapture how the way of life would have been at that time.

The next day, it’s time to head back to Dublin but with interesting stops on the way. First up is Adare, a village which is an architectural wealth of scenic beauty. The main street offers beautiful stone buildings, medieval monasteries, ruins and a picturesque village park. Then continue to Limerick, a major city in the Republic of Ireland. Its compact old town is known for the medieval era St. Mary’s Cathedral and St. John’s Square lined with Georgian townhouses. Standing along the River Shannon, the 13th-century King John’s Castle is one of the city’s most recognizable sites. Your final stop is at Birr Castle where you can choose to see the gardens, the historic science centre and the great telescope. Your final night is in Dublin before returning your rental car.
