Grand European: Holiday of a Lifetime

Duration
20 Days
Prices From:
US$ 9,999

On this latest of Goway’s Holidays of a Lifetime, this fully escorted tour combines interesting parts of Europe which many tours do not. You will experience different cultures and cuisines, different traditions and architecture and contrasting cities and landscapes. In 20 days, you will discover a Europe that will satisfy the most curious of travellers.

ENGLAND (London, Poole, Jersey) •  FRANCE (St. Malo, Loire Valley, Burgundy) • SWITZERLAND (Geneva, Montreux, Berne, Lugano) •  ITALY (Lake Maggiore, Milan, Parma, Cinque Terre, Florence, Venice)

On arrival in London, you will tour the highlights of this world-class city and enjoy a dinner cruise on the River Thames while marvelling at a selection of major highlights. Then head to one of England’s best-known archaeological sites, the mysterious monolith, Stonehenge. You will also spend time in Salisbury with its imposing cathedral before arriving in Poole, Dorset.

From here, you catch the ferry arriving in Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands. Jersey offers fantastic scenery including cliff-top views and rambling country lanes with the sea never far away. You will be introduced to Mont Orgueil Castle with its “witchcraft” exhibit and visit a winery for a tasting of local wines.

From Jersey, another ferry ride will bring you to St. Malo in Brittany, France. Enjoy a tour of this ancient port. Next up is the UNESCO World Heritage site of Mont. St. Michel reached only at low tide from the mainland. Discover the secrets of this small islet with its old abbey. On the way back to St. Malo, you will spend time at an oyster farm and, of course, sample one or two.

The Loire Valley is your next stop with its historic towns and its renowned chateaux, homes of former royalty and nobility. Have a speciality troglodyte lunch in the town of Saumur together with a tour including a visit to a riding school. Time spent in the Loire Valley will include a visit to the magnificent Chambord Chateaux, the largest in the region and where Leonardo da Vinci was once a guest. (If Chambord is not open, you will visit the equally famous Chenonceau Castle).

En route to Beaune in Burgundy, one of France’s most important wine producing regions, stop in Autun famous for its Gallo-Roman monuments. In Beaune, you will have the unusual experience of trying a local delicacy, Burgundy snails! Naturally, you will have time to taste some Burgundy wines before continuing to the French border to cross into Switzerland.

Your first stop in Switzerland is Geneva, the European seat of the United Nations Organization and headquarters of the Red Cross, both of which will be seen on a guided tour of the city. Continue to the attractive city of Montreux situated on Lake Geneva. Then, it’s off to Switzerland’s capital, Berne, the city with more arcades than any other European city. Reach Lugano, the beautiful town with a Mediterranean flavour on the lake of the same name. Have a cruise on the lake before crossing the border into Italy.

Another beautiful lake is your first stop in Italy, Lake Maggiore, in the shadows of the Alps. En route to Stresa, stop in Locarno for some wine tasting. Here, visit the Borromean Islands often described as sensationally beautiful and home to former residences of Ernest Hemingway and various members of royalty. Explore scenic gardens and a 17th Century Palazzo. Then it’s on to Milan, capital of fashion and design. You will be enamoured with its Duomo (cathedral) as well as the famous Galleria shopping centre. And don’t forget the excellent shopping possibilities.

From Milan, head to Parma, renowned for its ham and its Parmigiano cheese. You will visit a ham factory as well as have lunch consisting of these two specialities. Parma has other attributes and a tour of the city will show you art masterpieces and other treasures from different eras. With Parma as your base, travel to La Spezia on the Mediterranean coast for a wonderful day to be spent in the fabulous Cinque Terre coastal region. Cinque Terre offers small colourful and charming cliff side towns and villages to explore. A boat ride along the coast is included in your day.

What can you say about Florence, the “The Cradle of the Italian Renaissance”. Florence is considered a cultural, artistic and architectural gem, home to many masterpieces of Renaissance art. Visit the magnificent Duomo, the Uffizi Gallery, the Galleria dell'Accademia with Michelangelo’s ‘David’ sculpture and the famous Ponte Vecchio plus much more.

Your final destination is a worthy climax to your tour - Venice. The city is like no other, built on 100 small islands in a lagoon; no roads, just canals. Your time here will cover the Grand Canal lined with Renaissance and Gothic palaces, St. Mark’s Basilica with its renowned Campanile bell tower situated in the beautiful St. Mark’s Square and view iconic sites such as the Doges Palace and the Bridge of Sighs. Also included is a boat ride.

Venice is your last stop on your Holiday of a Lifetime visit to Europe, a continent full of surprises and treasures.
