Greenland Add On

Duration
6 Days

A perfect way to include Greenland in your North Atlantic vacation. Take a relaxing dip in the hot springs of Reykjavik in Iceland before heading to Ilulissat, Greenland to witness icebergs drift down the majestic ice-fjord.

This 6-day tour takes you to remote Greenland and its stunning glaciers after visiting the vibrant capital of Iceland.

Reykjavik is Iceland’s capital and the world’s northernmost capital. With a population of only 130,000, it’s easy to think options in Reykjavik are limited, but don’t let the small size fool you. This small city boasts big culture. From the National Museum that tells the story of the nation’s founding to the smoky hot springs that surround the town to the vibrant nightlife and booming restaurant culture, Reykjavik is a happening city. Visit the Pearl, the dome-shaped glass landmark that is surrounded by six massive hot-water tanks. One of these tanks houses the Saga Museum, which recreates the ancient Icelandic sagas using state-of-the-art artistic recreations.

Fly from Reykjavik to Ilulissat, Greenland—the nation’s most popular tourist destination and third largest town. Greenland has the smallest population density on the planet so the wide open spaces may overwhelm you. But don't be daunted. The island wilderness is stunning, as is the blend of Inuit and Danish cultures.

Located on the western side of the island, Ilulissat has a population of 4,500 and is the historical home of polar explorer Knud Rasmussen. It’s also ground zero for the growth of Greenland’s emerging tourism industry. Lovely rainbow houses dot the hillside, while the nearby ice-fjord contributes icebergs on a constant basis. Take a hike from Ilulissat to nearby Sermermiut, an ancient Inuit settlement dating back over 2,000 years. If you’re adventurous, take a helicopter flight over the Ilulissat Ice-fjord and see the majesty of Greenland from the air.

From Ilulissat cruise to Eqip Sermia or the Eqi glacier, around 80 kilometres north. As your boat sails around the glacier, you’ll be stunned by its 90-meter high bank rising straight out of the ocean. Watch ice chunks constantly break off and fall into the sea. You’ll never forget the sound they make when they do.

This brief tour of Greenland and Reykjavik can easily be combined with the Volcanoes and Glaciers tour in Iceland for a fuller experience of these two incredible North Atlantic destinations.

Day 1

Arrival in Iceland

On arrival into Iceland, and after you clear customs and immigration, please make your way to the Fly Bus desk, where you will be directed to your transfer bus for the ride into Reykjavik. If your flight lands early in the day, a great suggestion is to explore Reykjavík, the largest municipality in Iceland. Please enquire about available city tours. Most hotels begin check-in around 2:00pm.

Ingolfur Arnarson, the first settler of Iceland, built his farm on the peninsula where Reykjavík stands today. The town got its name "Smokey Bay" after the columns of steam that rose from the hot springs in the area and made such a deep impression on the first settlers.

Reykjavik offers a multitude of restaurants and/or coffee-houses, making dinner a great way to get better acquainted with Iceland's capital. Dinner is not included.

Day 2

Morning Flight to Greenland - Walking Tour of Ilulissat

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before being transferred to Reykjavik domestic airport and your flight to Greenland. You arrive around noon to the picturesque town of Ilulissat. It has a beautiful location at the mouth of a long Icefjord, filled with enormous icebergs from the most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere.

A guide from Greenland will welcome you at the airport and take you to the hotel. After check-in at the hotel, you will get a short introduction to your tours in Greenland and optional activities you might like to consider. Afterwards you will enjoy a 2 hour walking tour in the centre of the town with your local guide and learn about modern life close to the Arctic Circle. Return back at the hotel for a welcome dinner.

Eqi Glacier Boat Tour - Glacier and Incredible Icebergs

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel. Today you get a pick up in the morning for a full day tour to the Eqi glacier (sailing time is from 6 to 12 hours, depending on the boat used). Very few places in Greenland are as beautiful as the Eqi glacier, thrusting out in a fjord north of Ilulissat. Sail to the very edge of the glacier's frontline rising 80-90 meters (262 to 296 feet) above the surface of the ocean. Enjoy lunch on board, surrounded by majestic ice bergs. Through the cruise, watch big chunks of heavy ice break off the glacier and tremble intensely into the water. The sight and sound of icebergs shattering is impressive. Afterwards you will be driven back to the hotel.
