Highlights of the Baltics: Vilnius to St. Petersburg

Duration
10 Days
Prices From:
US$ 3,715

Experience a decadent display of medieval old towns, imperial palaces, and tranquil landscapes on this journey through the Baltic. Embark on an impressive journey from Vilnius to Riga, Tallinn, and St. Petersburg to explore architectural masterworks and experience the charming old world of the Baltic.

This 10-day Baltic vacation takes you to the region's capitals, including Vilnius, Riga, Tallinn, and St. Petersburg.

Your Baltic vacation begins in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. Founded in the 14th century and home to Europe’s largest Baroque old town, Vilnius is overwhelmingly gorgeous. Head on a walking tour to see the Old Town and its Neoclassical Vilnius Cathedral, iconic Gedminas’ Tower, and the Gates of Dawn, a city gate that’s one of the country’s most significant monuments. You’ll also visit the Amber Museum to learn about the city’s importance to the European amber industry. Afterwards, head to Trakai, the nation’s medieval capital, to enjoy a kibinai tasting. Spend that evening in Anyksciai, where you’ll stroll along the scenic treetop path above the town. The next day, stop at Birzai to try local beer and Rundale Palace, to admire the gorgeous Baroque and Rococo architecture, before reaching Riga.

Riga is the Latvian capital and the largest city of the Baltic States. Head on a walking tour to see the gorgeous medieval architecture and lively marketplaces. Explore the Old Town to see Gothic spires and Art Nouveau facades as well as popular landmarks like Riga Castle, the Dome Cathedral, and the red brick Brother of Blackheads building. Continue to Parnu to head on a walking tour and see the 19th century timber villas before crossing the border into Estonia and reaching the capital Tallinn.

Tallinn combines medieval history with modern eccentricity. It has garnered something of a reputation as the region’s party capital, but its classical architecture remains one of the highpoints of a visit here. You’ll tour the Old Town of Vanalinn to see the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky, Toompea Castle, and the domed Cathedral of St. Mary. While in town, you can also take advantage of the booming arts and crafts scene and indulge in the city’s famous nightlife.

On the final leg of your Baltic vacation, head into Russia and stop at Peterhof Park and Gardens to see some of the treasures of Peter the Great. Afterwards, reach your final destination, St. Petersburg, the artistic and imperial capital of Russia. Built by Peter the Great in the early 18th century, St. Petersburg is full of palaces and cathedrals that show off two centuries of Russian decadence. Visit the State Hermitage to see the artistic wealth of the old empire. Gasp at the towering golden spire of the cathedral inside Peter and Paul Fortress. At the Russian Museum, you’ll see the world’s best collection of Russian paintings. You can even head to the Mariinsky Theatre and the Shostakovich Philharmonic to take in some of the world’s best opera and ballet. No matter how you spend your time in St. Petersburg, you’ll be experiencing the old world of the Baltic at its best.
