Iceland Complete Self-Drive with Airfare

Duration
11 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,689

MODERATE | SELF-DRIVE: Explore the waterfalls, glaciers, and hot springs of Iceland on this self-drive across the nation. Driving the Ring Road, you’ll tour the Golden Circle, gaze upon Godafoss and Dettifoss waterfalls, watch icebergs floating on Jokulsarlon, and experience the quirky friendliness of Reykjavik.

This 11-day Icelandic vacation takes you a self-drive across the island nation to see glaciers, waterfalls, and explore its Viking history. It features a mix of moderate and first-class accommodations, independent touring, and international airfare.

Your journey begins with a flight across the Atlantic Ocean to Keflavik International Airport, located on the Reykjanes peninsula around 25 minutes from the capital Reykjavik. Pick up your rental car and begin your journey across the North Atlantic nation. You can recharge with a dip in the famous thermal waters of the Blue Lagoon, the nation’s most famous spa, before reaching your accommodation for the night, located alongside the hot spring lake of Laugarvatn. Rise in the morning and explore the famous tourist route of the Golden Circle. Hike between rocky outcrops where the tectonic plates meet at Thingvellir, see mighty geysers explode at the Geysir geothermal area, and gaze upon the massive waterfall of Gullfoss before heading northwest along the Ring Road to the fjord town of Borgarnes. Continue along the Ring Road and see the valley of Skagafjordur, the nation’s centre of horse breeding, before reaching Akureyri, the unofficial capital of North Iceland.

Explore the Diamond Circle between Akureyri and Lake Myvatn, renowned for its geothermal activity, and see Godafoss Waterfall, one of the largest in the nation. See the lava formations and volcanic activity around Krafla before visiting Husavik, the nation’s whale-watching capital and a town made famous by the movie Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. Descend into the mythic horseshoe canyon of Asbyrgi before seeing Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall in Europe.

Pass into the East Fjords and venture along the ocean road to Hofn, known as the lobster capital of Northern Europe. Head into Vatnajokull National Park, which surrounds the largest ice cap in Europe, and see the fairy tale lagoon of Jokulsarlon, where icebergs calve off the glacier and float in the lagoon, making it seem like it’s a lake of glass. On the south shore, see the black sand beaches of Vik and visit the stunning drop waterfalls of Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss before reaching Reykjavik to spend your final night in the quirky and very walkable Icelandic capital.

At the end of your journey, return to Keflavik Airport to drop off your car and fly back home.

Geothermal Lagoon - Flower Village - Geothermal Greenhouses

Pick up the car at the airport and start your Iceland experience.
From Keflavik International Airport we recommend driving the southern coast of the Reykjanes peninsula towards your first overnight stay in the charming village of Hveragerdi. This village is one of the few sites in the world located directly on top of a geothermal area and, because of its many greenhouses heated by hot water from nearby springs it is often called the "flower village".

If your flight arrives early in the day, consider a stop at the Blue Lagoon (a short distance from the airport) for a chance to relax in the soothing geothermal mineral waters. (not included in the trip price)

Important: Please note that admission to the Blue Lagoon must be booked in advance.
