Iceland Winter Super Jeep Adventure: Reykjavik to Reykjavik

Duration
5 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,089

If you think a winter Iceland tour is all early nights and frozen wasteland, think again. This spectacular short trip offers you the country’s best sights at their most dramatic, with a good chance of spying the Northern Lights.

Explore Iceland on this Locally Escorted Group Tour that includes specially selected 3 star accommodations, unique 4x4 Jeep vehicles, sightseeing, and a knowledgeable Tour Escort.

This 5-day winter Iceland trip is packed with the kind of beauty you can only see in the ‘dark’ half of the year. Enjoy thinner crowds as you take in the country’s most impressive attractions.

Rug up! Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you’re staying inside. In fact, Iceland stays warmer than many parts of North America in winter, and those who do brave the cold are richly rewarded. Depart Reykjavik bound for a cave excursion in an ancient lava tube. Then drive on to a local farm, followed by Eyjafjallajokull, the volcano famous for grounding flights across Europe when it erupted in 2010. Take a 4x4 tour through Thorsmork Nature Reserve, and spend the night at a local guesthouse, where the absence of light pollution greatly increases your chances of seeing the Northern Lights.

Cross the lava field of Eldhraun to explore Skaftafell National Park and the Svinafellsjokull glacier, stopping at the Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon to visit the local wildlife. Your last full day takes you to the remote wilds of Iceland for another 4x4 adventure. What you’ll see may depend on snow conditions, but sights can include the Hekla volcano, towering Haifoss waterfall or the Sjain canyon. Visit a traditional Viking style house and warm up in a naturally heated lake. Finish your day en route back to Reykjavik with Iceland’s classic Golden Circle, including Gulifoss waterfall, Thingvellir national park and geyser, and the site of Iceland’s first parliament.

Day 2

Caving, Eyjafjallajokull area, Black Sand Coast, 4x4 Adventures

Meet your driver-guide who will brief you on the day's excursion. Today you are an explorer as well as a traveller!

We start by driving through Reykjavik town centre to give you an introduction to the country and its people. Leaving the city, it won't take long to reach a remote area, and the first stop is to try some simple caving in an ancient lava tube. From underground there we will visit the farm Gaulverjabaer to experience how people live in Iceland's countryside. Once we reach Eyjafjallajokull, the volcano that caused air chaos in 2010, we head north for a 4x4 adventure in the Thorsmork Nature Reserve and enjoy a picnic lunch featuring local specialties. Then we'll visit Gljufrabui, a waterfall that is just accessible to small groups. The waterfall on the trip is Skogarfoss, where we take a quick stop to visit a traditional turf house. Then we will climb aboard our 4x4 jeeps again, this time driving along part of the south coast's famous black sand beaches. We'll spend the evening at the Hrifunes guesthouse, a cozy home in the countryside, far away from any light pollution and therefore giving us a good chance of glimpsing the elusive Northern Lights.

Please note that the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon seeing them cannot be guaranteed.

Day 3

Glacial lagoon, Eldhraun lava field, cozy cottage and Northern Light hunting

After a hearty breakfast, we start the day journeying along the mountain road that crosses Eldhraun, a huge lava field from an eruption in the 18th century that some say was a cause of the French Revolution (more about that during the tour!). Today you will visit the canyon-like Fjadrargljufur (we'll teach you how to pronounce it!), huge cliffs at Lomagnupur, and incredible basalt columns. Then at Skaftafell National Park, we don our crampons, and ice pick in hand, we take a walk on Svinafellsjokull glacier itself. We'll enjoy another picnic lunch. After that, we'll visit the famous Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon, with its colourful icebergs and lazy seals. We'll spend the evening again at Hrinues.

Day 4

Hekla volcano, 4x4 adventures, bathing in a hot lake, Gullfoss, Geysir, Thingvellir

We'll start the day in Thjorsardalur, a remote valley. Once again, we'll board our 4x4s for an adventure in the snow. We stop at Fossabrekkur, to drink the pristine water directly from the waterfall. Depending on the snow conditions, we might stop at the frozen lake by the Hekla volcano, or visit Haifoss, the highest waterfall in Iceland, or drive by the Gjain canyon. We'll also visit a house built in Viking style, and top by the Hjalp waterfall. After our picnic lunch today, we recommend a bath in a naturally warm lake, an experience very popular with the locals. We'll end the day visiting the three pearls of Iceland's Golden Circle tour: the big waterfall Gullfoss, the spouting hot spring Geysir and the national park and UNESCO site Thingvellir, site of Iceland's first parliament and a place where two tectonic plates are slowly but steadily separating. We'll bit you adieu with a taste of our local schnapps, brennivin, and a bit of fermented shark meat to go with it.

Return to Reykjavik where the evening is at your leisure.
