Intro to Spitsbergen: Fjords, Glaciers and Wildlife of Svalbard

10 Days
Prices From:
US$ 7,791

Embark on a northern expedition to the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen, where you’ll explore the wildlife capital of the Arctic. Spend eight days aboard an ice-strengthened cruise vessel and circumnavigate the island, spotting polar bears, walruses, mighty glaciers, and icy fjords along the way.

This 10-day Arctic vacation takes you around the northern island of Spitsbergen to see glaciers and polar bears. It features first-class accommodations aboard a sea vessel, shared tours, and is a great expedition for nature lovers.

Your journey begins in Oslo, the Norwegian capital, where you’ll have a night to enjoy some of the underrated attractions of this northern capital. After getting acquainted with Norwegian culture, you’ll catch a flight to the northern island of Spitsbergen in the Svalbard archipelago and its largest urban centre, Longyearbyen. Enjoy your first views of the glacier-covered mountains and icy waters before boarding the Ocean Adventurer, your 4-star cruise vessel that’ll be your home for the next eight nights. This ice-strengthened vessel has comfortable rooms, a library, lounge, dining room, and bar, making it an ideally-equipped base for your adventure across Spitsbergen.

You’ll spend seven full days exploring Spitsbergen. Each day’s itinerary is determined by weather and conditions, so there’s no fixed route around the island. One day, you may head through Western Spitsbergen to see the fjords or head on land to see polar flora and cascading glaciers. Take an excursion to the 14th of July Glacier or Fjortende Julibreen, with its stunning ice wall, or see the whaling settlement of Smeerenburg on Amsterdam Island in the northwest part of Svalbard. Explore the jagged bird cliffs of Alkefjellet to see hundreds of Brunich’s guillemots crowding the rock walls, or see the icy waterfalls of Hinlopen Strait.

Best of all, you’re sure to see some polar bears on your journey, as Spitsbergen is one of the world’s most active polar bear locations. You’ll also spot walruses crowding the coastlines, wildflowers bursting through the icy permafrost, and sea birds and migrating whales in the northern waters off the coast.

At the end of your expedition around the archipelago, you’ll disembark in Longyearbyen and fly back to Oslo to end your vacation.
