A Journey Through Germany

Duration
8 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,340

Discover romance and natural beauty along Germany’s Romantic Road. Starting and ending in Munich, this journey takes you to medieval towns sitting alongside picturesque rivers, half-timbre villages in the Black Forest, and fairy tale castles set against a backdrop of alpine mountains.

This 8-day German vacation takes you along the Romantic Road and through the Black Forest. It features first-class accommodations, small group tours, and is a great add-on to a stay in Munich.

Your journey through Germany begins in Munich, where you’ll join your tour and head to Regensburg, which sits on the Danube and is famous for its gorgeous medieval old town. Enjoy a lunch before continuing on to Weltenburg Abbey, where you’ll tour the Benedictine abbey and enjoy a beer tasting. That evening, reach Bamberg in northern Bavaria, where you’ll spend the night. The next day, head on a walking tour of Bamberg’s streets to see the ornate 17th-century palace and Bamberg Cathedral. Continue on to Wurzburg Residence, the lavish palace known for its Venetian frescoes and Baroque and Rococo architecture.

Turn onto the Romantic Road and stop off in the charming towns of Weikersheim and Creglingen before reaching Rothenburg, where you’ll stay the next two nights. Spend a day exploring the medieval buildings of this city and nearby centres. Admire the half-timbered houses and Gothic churches before heading to Dinkelsbuhl to stroll alongside medieval fortifications along the Tauber. In Nordlingen, you’ll have time to wander beside medieval towers and walk along parapets. Head onwards to Ladenburg and enjoy a wine tasting and vineyard tour outside of Landau before reaching Baden-Baden, a resort town famous for its location in the Black Forest and abundance of mineral waters.

Connect to Hausach and board the train to ride along the Black Forest Railway, passing through 37 tunnels, on route to Sankt Georgen. Stretch your legs before continuing on the train to Triberg and eventually Freiburg, the university town known for its reconstructed medieval old town. Venture into the heart of the Black Forest and reach Todtnau and explore the nearby village of Todtmoos, where you’ll visit a local café and discovery the history behind Black Forest gateau. You’ll even have a chance to try making this local confection for yourself before returning to Freiburg.

On the last leg of your journey, take in views of famous Lake Bodensee on the way to Lindau before heading into the Ammergau Alps, where you’ll have the chance to explore famous Neuschwansteain Castle, built by the “mad’ King Ludwig II. Afterwards, stop off in the lovely mountain town of Oberammergau before reaching Munich, where your German vacation ends.
