London and the Countryside including Airfare

Duration
8 Days
Prices:
On request

Spend the majority of your week independently discovering the best of what London has to offer. Finish up your holiday by joining your small group tour to the Cotswolds and beyond.

This 8-day trip to London is ideal for a first-timer or return visitor who wants to take the city at their own pace, choosing their own itinerary, before embarking on an organised overnight trip to Avebury, Oxford, the Cotswolds, and the Roman ruins of Bath.

It’s been said time and again that (s)he who is tired of London is tired of life. The British capital offers endless things to see and do and is going to be a little different for every traveller who visits. You might want to spend the day sightseeing the big attractions like the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral, or the British Museum. Perhaps take a day trip out to Hampton Court Palace or Windsor Castle. You’ll have three full days to enjoy the city, not including your arrival day, so make of London what you will before embarking on your trip out to Avebury.

Your next two days are all about the incredible history of southwest England, starting with Avebury and its famous stone circle. You’ll also see the Cherhill White Horse, a figure cut into a local chalk hillside in the late 18th century. Visit the lovely village of Wilshire on your way to historic Bath. You’ll have time to explore here on your own, soaking up the legacy of the ancient Romans before overnighting in Cirencester. The following day, it’s time to explore the Cotswolds, and the classic view of old England they portray. Explore the rivers and perfectly preserved villages that have remained largely unchanged for centuries. On the way to Oxford, stop in Bampton, a frequent filming location for Downton Abbey. It’s then time to explore the renowned 900-year-old university itself before returning to London for your final included night.

Day 4

The Coca-Cola London Eye (Fast Track Entry)

Enjoy the benefits of getting your tickets just 15 minutes before your experience and bypassing the majority of the queue. At 135m, Coca-Cola London Eye is the world's largest cantilevered observation wheel. It was conceived and designed by Marks Barfield Architects and was launched in 2000. It has already won over 85 awards for national and international tourism, outstanding architectural quality and engineering achievement. The observation wheel turns slow enough for people to embark while it is moving. A complete turn takes about thirty minutes. Thanks to the construction of the glass capsules on the outer side of the rim, you will have a great 360 degree view over London. Many famous landmarks are clearly visible, including Buckingham Palace, St. Paul's Cathedral and the Houses of Parliament. On a clear day you can see as far as forty kilometers (25 miles). Make sure you get your tickets in advance, lines can be very long, both the lines for embarking and for ticket purchases. It's less crowded at night when the views are even more spectacular.

Duration30 Minutes
Day 5

Day at Leisure

Today is totally free and at leisure. You can take advantage of any optional activities available or simply relax.

Day 6

Depart London and spend the night in Avebury

Leaving the great city of London behind you today you head west. You will arrive at the pretty village of Avebury. Here you will be able to wander amidst the largest stone circle in the world - part of a World Heritage Site. Nearby is also the site of the Cherhill White Horse, which was cut out of the chalk hillside in 1780. Not far from here, set in rural Wiltshire, is Lacock village, famous for its picturesque streets, historic buildings and its more recent role as a television and film location. The Abbey, located at the heart of the village within its own woodland grounds, is a quirky country house of various architectural styles. You will spend some time in the afternoon in Bath, full of relics of its Roman past and of course its famous Bath. From here you will continue to Cirencester, set in the heart of the Cotswolds, which is so quintessentially English. Cirencester was the second largest town in Britain during Roman times.

Day 7

Depart Avebury before returning to London

You will discover some more of the Cotswold scenery and villages. You will see some outstanding countryside with river valleys, water meadows and beech woods, sleepy ancient limestone villages and historic market towns, famous for being 'typically English', where time has stood still for over 300 years. Your visits will include Bibury a picturesque village with many of the traditional features unique to this area. Next stop will be Stow-on-the-Wold, the highest town in the Cotswolds and packed with charming traditional houses. On route to Oxford we make a stop in Bampton, the village that features in many episodes of the worldwide hit TV series Downton Abbey. Later in the afternoon we visit Oxford, renowned for over 900 year as a centre of academic excellence. Discover at your own pace the college courtyards, unspoilt narrow alleys and the historic town square. Harry Potter fans might want to see Christ Church, where many scenes from the films have been shot. The grandeur of the Great Hall has formed the basis of Hogwarts Hall.

Later that day we return to London arriving at approximately 7:00pm.
