Magna Carta: Classic England Luxury Barge Cruise

Enjoy a week on the River Thames on a luxury barge. Start with a British afternoon tea at a deluxe London hotel. Then begin your cruise visiting historical palaces, a royal castle, art gallery, the site of the Magna Carta, Oxford colleges and much more.

Start your tour with a typical English Cream Tea at the deluxe Stafford Hotel in Mayfair, London after which, travel to Hampton Court to join the Magna Carta, your luxury barge cruise boat. On board, enjoy a champagne reception and overnight. 

The following morning, visit Hampton Court Palace. See King Henry V111’s apartments and the world’s most famous maze. Then cruise through Molesey Lock and moor at Runnymede for the night. 

Next morning, begin with enjoying the spa facilities at the Runnymede-on-Thames Hotel then visit the Magna Carta Memorial. The Magna Carta was signed by King John in 1215. Further upstream, reach Windsor and Royal Windsor Castle. Tour the castle including the state apartments, Queen Mary’s dollhouse and St. Georges Chapel. Moor overnight here. 

The next day cruise to the Tudor manor house of Dorney Court used regularly as a film location. Then cruise past some fine houses in Bray eventually arriving at Cliveden Reach and Cliveden House, once home to the illustrious Astor family. Overnight at Cliveden Reach.

A little further on, arrive at Cookham and visit the gallery of the famous English artist, Stanley Spencer followed by a visit to Peter Freebody’s Boatyard at Hurley to see how boats are built and restored. Time afterwards to drop in at England’s oldest public house, Ye Olde Bell Inn. Overnight in Hurley.

The next morning, continue to Henley-on-Thames the home of the annual international rowing regatta. Then sail on to Oxford, the city of dreaming spires and enjoy a tour of one of its famous university colleges. Moor here for the night.

Disembark in Oxford the next morning and return by road to London.

Hampton Court Palace

You will be met at the Stafford Hotel in Central London at 15:00 for afternoon English cream tea, before being transferred to the Magna Carta, moored at Hampton Court. Champagne reception and welcome by the Captain and crew. Dinner on board.

The ambience created by combining a traditional 1936-built barge hull with fine mahogany, teak and oak woods is outstanding. Modern amenities include under floor heating, spa pool and contemporary ensuite facilities for the four spacious 200sq ft suites. The upper deck saloon and dining area feature picture windows and stylish furnishings. Your Master Chef produces a range of mouth-watering dishes whilst you enjoy the riverside surroundings from your floating country hotel. Her experienced Captain knows the Thames well and will pilot the barge and be your tour guide.

Day 2

Hampton Court Palace to Runnymede

This morning you explore the magnificent Hampton Court Palace. You will tour King Henry VIII's apartments and the Royal Chapel, feel the chill in the haunted gallery and wonder at the Tudor kitchens. Outside, the gardens are breath-taking with The Great Vine, the oldest in the country still producing grapes and the famous maze. After lunch we cruise through Molesey Lock and moor at Runnymede. Dinner on board.

Day 3

Runnymede to Windsor

After breakfast, you have the option to use the spa facilities of the Runnymede-on-Thames Hotel. Then you cruise to Windsor, past the Magna Carta Memorial and Magna Carta Island where in 1215, King John was forced to meet the powerful barons and seal the historic document. Your afternoon excursion is to Windsor Castle. Built by William the Conqueror in 1066 and a royal home for over 900 years, this is the largest inhabited castle in the world. You will explore the State Apartments, Queen Mary's Dolls House, and St George's Chapel and enjoy the far-reaching views. Dinner on board.

Day 4

Windsor to Cookham

This morning you cruise upstream and take a short walk to the Tudor manor house of Dorney Court, a very special home that has been owned by the Palmer family for more than 450 years and used regularly as a film location. Then you will cruise past the fabulous waterside houses of Bray and through the spectacular Cliveden Reach to moor en route at Cliveden House itself. Once home to the Astor family it has amazing gardens and was, of course, the scene of political scandal and intrigue. Dinner on board.

Day 5

Cookham to Hurley

After breakfast, you will visit the Stanley Spencer Gallery and take a walk around the village he once described as 'Heaven on Earth', before cruising through Marlow to Hurley. You will tour Peter Freebody's boatyard and watch in wonder as the traditional craftsmen build and restore classic wooden craft. You have time to explore the ancient village, including Ye Olde Belle, reputed to be the oldest inn in the country, before returning to the hotel barge. Dinner on board.

Day 6

Hurley to Henley-on-Thames

A morning cruise to Henley-on-Thames through fabulous countryside to your final mooring along the famous Henley Regatta Rowing Course. Then, an earlier lunch, followed by a drive to Oxford for a fascinating tour of Christ Church, Oxford's grandest college, founded by Cardinal Wolsey and then again by King Henry VIII. The magnificent surroundings were also where Lewis Carroll wrote Alice in Wonderland. Captain's Farewell Dinner on board.

Day 7

Henley-on-Thames

After breakfast you will disembark the Magna Carta and be transferred to London. You can choose to be dropped-off at The Stafford Hotel at 11am, or at Heathrow Airport between 10am and 11am.
