Moscow is the capital of Russia and serves as the country’s major political, economic, cultural and scientific centre. The Moskva River bends its way through the city with the more prominent sites featured on the northern bank of the river Moscow is an 860 year old city with many reminders of its Imperial and Soviet past.
Built between the 14th and 17th centuries, the Kremlin, which once served as the residence of the Great Prince as well as a religious centre, is currently the official residence of the President of Russia. Red square is the main focal point in the centre of Moscow. The buildings surrounding the Square are all significant in some respect. Lenin’s Mausoleum contains the embalmed body of Lenin, the founder of the Soviet Union. It also houses St. Basil’s Cathedral.
Culturally rich, Moscow also offers Russian performance arts such as ballet, operatic music shows and theatre as well as many art museums. The Tretyakov Gallery has 62 rooms and 100,000 works charting the development of Russian painting from the 10th to the end of the 19th Century. The New Maiden Convent also known as the Novodevichy Convent, one of Moscow’s most beautiful cloisters, is an amazing architectural monument and also one of the greatest of Moscow’s attractions, possibly second only to the Kremlin. It was an active convent built in the early 16th Century where the most beautiful girls were selected to be sent.
Other highlights are the Sparrow Hills, formerly the Lenin Hills where excellent panoramic views of the city can be enjoyed, Arbat Street, a traditional pedestrian thoroughfare about 1 kilometre/0.6 miles long with many small shops, cafes and restaurants and the Borodino Panorama or Battle Museum with its collection of weapons, ammunition, uniforms and graphics, but the main feature is the round canvas painting, 115m wide and 15m high depicting the battle between the Russian Army and Napoleon’s Army.
