Discover Switzerland’s unique natural treasures, its unparalleled mountains and lakes, on this extended journey through the Swiss Alps also taking in a part of Bavaria and a sojourn in Liechtenstein. Experience charming old cities and towns plus breathtaking views.

Commence your exploration of Switzerland’s beautiful world famous mountains and lakes at Zurich airport where you will be transferred to Stein am Rhein for a walking tour of the local vineyards famous for their Pinot Noirs. Enjoy a wine tasting while there. Then continue along the River Rhein to Konstanz, a university city with a charming old town, unchanged since the Middle Ages with time to discover the old area of Konstanz before heading to Arbon for 2 nights’ accommodation.

The next morning, travel to the Island of Reichenau, a UNESCO World Heritage town with an interesting abbey dating back to 724 AD. Then it’s on to Unteruhldingen, known as the “Village on Stilts” due to the many houses built this way. Later cruise across Lake Konstanz to the Bavarian town of Lindau with its exceptional gardens. Return to Arbon.

The next day cross into the Duchy of Liechtenstein stopping at its capital, Vaduz and its castle, home to the reigning prince of Liechtenstein. Afterwards, continue to Chur, Switzerland’s oldest city where you will explore the old town with its quaint cobbled streets. Overnight in Chur.

Continue to Lucerne for a 2 night stay. Start with a walking tour of the city with its well preserved 14th Century wall, the Museggmauer and its medieval Chapel Bridge. Then visit a chocolatier to learn the history of chocolate making.

The following morning, take a boat ride to Vitznau and join the cog railway, Europe’s first mountain railway, to Mount Rigi where you will experience breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding region. Return by cable car and boat to Lucerne.

Next travel next through the green Swiss valleys to the village of Murren in the Bernese Oberland. Murren is a car-free village with access only by cable car. Enjoy a short walking tour before having a cheese fondue dinner in the evening. Stay 2 nights in Murren.

A highlight the following day is a trip to the Jungfrauhoch which rises to a height of 3450 metres/11,200 feet. Reach the mountain via Europe’s highest railway. From the top, you will be able to see 3 important and spectacular mountains, the Eiger, the Monch and the Jungfrau from the observation terrace.

Leave Murren and travel to the capital of Switzerland, Bern with its medieval streets and 800 year old history. Have a walking tour taking in the famous Bear Pit, the interesting clock tower and the 13th Century gate. Overnight in Bern.

The next day, continue to Egglwil where you will pay a visit to an Alpine horn maker and have the opportunity to try playing one. Then travel to Rhine Falls where you see Europe’s largest waterfall and take a boat trip into the middle of the falls. Later, return to Zurich airport.

Day 1

Zurich to Stein am Rhein, Konstanz and Arbon

Your tour commences from Hotel Montana (Konradstrasse 39, 8005, Zurich) at 08:30am. Please ensure you are at the meeting point at least 15 minutes prior to departure. If you cannot locate your Tour Leader within 15 minutes of the designated departure time, please call +44 208 987 0990.

From Zurich you will travel to the Schaffhausen region, which is becoming increasingly famous for its Pinot Noir grape. In Stein am Rhein, enjoy a private walking tour through some vineyards, followed by a tasting. Later you will follow the Rhine River towards Konstanz, a university city located on Lake Constance, which has remained almost unchanged since the Middle Ages. Enjoy some free time to discover the Old Town, before continuing to Arbon where the group will enjoy a welcome dinner together.

Day 2

Island of Reichenau, Unteruhldingen and Lindau

Your first visit today is the Island of Reichenau which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000. You will traverse its long tree-lined boulevard connecting the island with the mainland and spend time exploring its varied landscapes. In Unteruhldingen, known as the village on stilts, you will have the chance to discover what life was like during the Stone and Bronze ages. Next is a cruise across Lake Constance to the charming Bavarian town of Lindau. After exploring this beautiful garden and island town, you will return to Arbon for an evening at leisure.

Arbon to Liechtenstein and Chur

We travel to the principality of Liechtenstein, which is tucked away between Switzerland and Austria. We stop in Vaduz, the capital, and admire its castle, the home of the reigning prince. Our destination today Hotel Stern in Chur, Switzerland's oldest city. Discover its charming Old Town and explore its quaint cobbled streets at your own pace for the rest of the day.

Chur to Lucerne and Weggis

In Lucerne we enjoy a delightful walking tour of this enchanting city. See the medieval Chapel Bridge, as well as the Museggmauer. Mount Rigi

This morning we board the cog railway, which was Europe's first-ever mountain railway, up to Mount Rigi. Known locally as the Queen of the Mountains, from the top we will enjoy breath-taking panoramic views over the Swiss Alps. This afternoon we return to Weggis and enjoy an evening at leisure.

Weggis to Brienz and Wengen

Today we embark on a scenic drive through the Swiss valleys to Brienz, a charming village whose 18th century houses, decorated with wood carvings, add to the lakeside backdrop. Our final destination today is Wengen, a car-free village, accessible only by cable car. Enjoy free time to explore the town independently before we meet for a cheese-fondue dinner.

Jungfraujoch

The highlight of any tour to Switzerland is the railway journey to the Jungfrau. At 3454 metres this is Europe's highest altitude railway station, often referred to as the 'Top of Europe'. Declared a natural World Heritage site by UNESCO, visitors can enjoy this incredible world of ice, snow and steep rock faces. Visit the impressive Ice Palace and experience panoramic views from the Sphinx Observation Terrace, before returning to Wengen for an evening at leisure.

Wengen to St Beatus Caves, Bern and Solothurn

Today's journey takes us to St Beatus Caves, where we enter the caves to see huge limestone formations, wide halls and gorges. Later we travel to Bern, the capital of Switzerland. The attraction of this city is its ambience and the perfectly preserved medieval street plan has made it a UNESCO World Heritage site. On a stroll through the Old Town, learn more about the city's 800-year history, marvel at the late Gothic cathedral (Munster), the Clock Tower (Zytglogge) and the 13th century city gate. We then make our way to Solothurn, one of Switzerland's most beautiful Baroque towns. Here we check in to Hotel Roter Ochsen and enjoy a farewell dinner together.

Day 9

Solothurn to Eggiwil, Rhine Falls and Zurich

From Bern you will head to Eggiwil to visit a local alphorn-maker and learn how this traditional instrument, a symbol of Swiss farming, is carved from wood. You even have a chance to try coaxing a sound out of the alphorn, before we continue to the Rhine Falls, Europe's largest waterfall. An exciting private boat trip takes you to the middle of the falls, before you return to dry land and continue our journey to Zurich, where the tour ends.

Tour finishes at 5:00pm back at the Hotel Montana (Konradstrasse 39, 8005, Zurich). Please bear in mind that drop-off time is an estimate only - traffic can be unpredictable!
