Ring in the New Year in the land of Vikings and elves on this trip to Reykjavik. Tour the world’s northernmost capital and learn about Viking legends and elvish folklore before counting down to midnight and admiring Reykjavik’s incredible fireworks display, celebrating the New Year in the company of some of Europe’s friendliest citizens.
This 5-day Iceland vacation takes you to this Nordic country to celebrate New Year’s Eve. International airfare is included in the price.
Your New Year’s Eve trip flies you into Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital and the world’s northernmost capital. With a population of only 130,000, it’s easy to think that Reykjavik has limited tourism options, but despite its small size, the city boasts big culture. Spend your first day getting acquainted with the city and its friendly, eccentric inhabitants. Stroll down Laugavegur and Skolavordustigur to get in touch with the city’s rhythms or head to the harbour village or Saga Museum to learn about Viking legends.
On New Year’s Eve, start the day with a city tour in the company of a local guide who’ll explain Icelandic traditions and introduce you to the folklore surrounding the New Year. Begin by purchasing some fireworks and then head to the Old Reykjavik Cemetery to learn about how the dead rise from the crypt on New Year’s Eve. Next, head to Hafnarfjordur to learn about the volcanic town’s elf population, which is most lively when ringing in the New Year. That evening, dine on a delicious feast of local foods before counting down to midnight with fireworks. Afterwards, dance into the night and experience Reykjavik’s famous nightlife. Spend New Year’s Day at leisure. Sleep in to recover from your nighttime revels or take a day trip to nearby famous Icelandic sights, like the Blue Lagoon or the Geyser hot spring area. The next day, head back to the airport to continue your journeys or return home.
This Iceland vacation makes for a great add-on to other journeys to Europe or a larger exploration of Iceland.

New Year's Eve
Breakfast at your hotel. Explore Reykjavik with a local guide and learn about special traditions and Icelandic folklore related to the magical New Year's Eve in Iceland.
The first stop is to purchase fireworks, which are sold through the Icelandic Rescue Teams. Each year on December 31st, Icelanders light up over 600 tons of fireworks - that's nearly 5 lbs (2 kg) per inhabitant! Next, take part in an Icelandic tradition and visit the Old Reykjavik Cemetery. Hear about this tradition's origins with the mysterious tale of the graveyard caretaker - and why the dead rise from their crypts on New Year's Eve.
Then it's off to Hafnarfjordur, "the town in the lava" famous for its elf population. Visit an elf stone, keeping in mind that the mystical "hidden people" roam freely on New Year's Eve! The excursion ends in a beautiful clearing where your group will light a small bonfire, enjoy a toast to life and love and say farewell to the passing year in traditional Icelandic fashion!
In the evening, delight in a New Year's Eve dinner artistically prepared and made from fresh local ingredients straight from Icelandic farmers and greenhouses and the neighboring ocean. Indulge yourself in various artisanal starters, hearty entrees and endless tasty desserts.
Fireworks are lit all night long, reaching a high point at midnight, when the sky lights up for a few minutes as fire trucks and docked ships ring their bells and blow their horns to welcome the New Year. After midnight, the nightclubs and pubs are open for business and the downtown area becomes a veritable catwalk of Icelanders outfitted in their finest holiday glitz, with dancing and celebrating going well into the morning. On the biggest party night in a city renowned for its nightlife, the New Year's Eve celebration in Reykjavik is the stuff of legends.
