Nordic Capitals & Fjord Dreams Coach Tour: Copenhagen to Helsinki

Duration
15 Days
Prices From:
US$ 4,216

Discover the cities and sights that define the north on this Scandinavia tour. Combine Norway’s breathtaking fjords with cosmopolitan cities such as Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Helsinki.

Explore the great capitals of the north on this Locally Escorted Group Tour that includes specially selected accommodations, quality transportation, sightseeing, special culinary experiences and a knowledgeable Tour Escort.

This 15-day Nordic trip takes you from wonderful Copenhagen to Helsinki, where European and Slavic influences come together.

Repeatedly praised as one of the world’s most liveable cities, Copenhagen earns its ‘wonderful’ tag with sights such as Tivoli Gardens, the old canal district of Nyhavn, Amalienborg Palace, and of course, the Little Mermaid statue. Your tour takes you past these and many more sights, also including a visit to Christiansborg Palace before leaving you the afternoon and following morning free to explore at leisure.

Take the ferry to Oslo and transfer to Lofthus, the splendid fjord landscape that inspired Edvard Grieg. It will do the same for you as you weave through towns such as Brimnes and Bruravik, cross the expansive Hardanger Bridge, and follow the fjords to Bergen. Norway’s second largest city is certainly its most picturesque. You’ll take a tour of the sights including the old Bryggen area, before enjoying the charms of the city at night. The following day, travel to Voss, a town with a rich history and a stunning natural location.

It’s also your gateway to a rail journey of a lifetime, including the famous Flam railway, which descends from Myrdal to the quaint fjord village of Flam. After some time to sightsee, take a ferry along the fjords to appreciate the region’s beauty before overnighting in Loen. The following day, you’ll have the option of visiting the Briksdal Glacier, the largest in Europe, noted for its distinctive blue ice. Later in the day, take in the view from Dalsnibba over Geiranger Fjord, then enjoy a very different kind of view, admiring the Mjelva family’s collection of vintage touring cars.

Return to Oslo, where a half day tour takes you around the capital’s most memorable sights. Including the Viking Ship Museum, Vigeland’s Sculpture Park, and the Royal Palace. Take the rest of the day at leisure to enjoy Oslo before departing for Stockholm. The Swedish capital is built on a beautiful archipelago connected by almost sixty bridges. Yet it occupies just fourteen of 30,000 islands that make up the region. Enjoy a walk through the Old Town, then discover what makes Stockholm one of the world’s most liveable modern cities. Perhaps visit the Vasa Museum, the open-air museum of Skansen, or the newly opened ABBA museum.

Board your ferry bound for Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, best known for its delightful Old Town. You’ll visit Toompea Castle, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the Dome church, among other sights. Then take the afternoon at leisure to explore all that’s unique about Tallinn, the most European of the Baltic capitals. Yet it still retains its Slavic identity. You’ll see more Slavic influences in Helsinki, your last stop, and Scandinavia’s least understood capital. As your tour takes you around the city, you’ll see a heady mix of European and Slavic styles in the architecture, Kaivopuisto Park, and other noteworthy buildings. You’ll also visit the Temppeliaukio Church, noted for being carved into solid rock. Perhaps end your day in true Finnish style with a sauna, before departing the following day.

Day 9

Geiranger

This morning, we travel north to explore two of the most dramatic and visited areas of Norway; The Eagle's road and Trollstigen or Troll's path. The steepest section of Road 63 between Geiranger and Eidsdal is called Ornevegen, or "The Eagle Road", as driving along its eleven hairpin turns at 620 meters (2,030 ft) above sea level feels a little like being airborne. At the uppermost bend is the most spectacular viewpoint of the road, Ørnesvingen, offering breath-taking views over the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord. Continue to to Linge crossing the Storfjord from Eisdal and from here to the Troll's path.

Driving Trollstigen is a dramatic and exciting experience. Some places it's cut into the mountain; and some parts are built on top of stone walls. An impressive bridge in natural stone carries it across the Stigfossen waterfall. The road is a result of hard work and an impressive piece of engineering work dated 100 years back in time. His Majesty King Haakon VII opened the road in the summer of 1936. At top of Trollstigen, there are viewpoints and steel walkways which allow you to get close to the dramatic mountains and waterfalls (Weather permitting as road closures can occur). Lunch stop en route (not included).

In the afternoon, we arrive back at the hotel. Dinner at the hotel is included.
